George Arnold Mitchell, Jr., was born July 14, 1955, in Beckley, West Virginia to George Arnold Mitchell, Sr., and Laura Mae Hill Mitchell. George was the first of three siblings. He departed this life on June 22, 2022, after a lengthy illness. George came to Baltimore, Maryland from Beckley, West Virginia in 1963. His mother Laura had divorced George’s father by that time and remarried to Dudley B. Saunders (predeceased) when Darlene and Wanda were born. George’s parents were strict believers in the church and he became a member of the First Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church. He was baptized at about 12 years old. The minister at the time was Bishop Leo K. Ceaser. George received his education at Frederick Douglass Senior High School graduating in 1974. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving active duty from 1974 to 1978 when he was honorably discharged. After military service, George came back to civilian life to join the workforce. George had various types of employment until he used his V.A. benefits to go to school to get more skills in order to compete in employment. George went to computer and welding schools. George decided to work in construction where he was comfortable. George believed in being independent to do for yourself and read to become knowledgeable. George was not married and had no children. George was preceded in death by his grandfather, Alonzo Hill, Sr.; grandmother, Tommie Lee Hill; three aunts, Martha Lee Hill-Legrand, Alma Hill, and Niecey Chambers; three uncles, Melvin Hill, Alonzo Hill, Jr., and Billy Joe Hill. He leaves to mourn: his sisters, Darlene Nickens and Wanda Perry; one brother-in-law, Richard Nickens; nephews, Steven Nickens, Sr. (Danielle), Cedric Perry II, Steven Nickens, Jr., Daniel Nickens, Branden Balgobin, and Zion Balgobin; nieces, Turkesa Balgobin (Richie), Sedria Galarza (Andrew) and Chelsea Balgobin; cousin, Princess West (William); godmother, Ida Wilson; best friend, Oliver B. Frazier; and a host of other relatives and friends.
