    George Herman Dunbar

    May 12, 1933 - December 31, 2021

George H. Dunbar, son of Charles and Irabell Dunbar- Thornton was born on May 12, 1933 in Allendale, South Caroline. He peacefully departed this life on December 31,2021. He received his education at Frederick Douglass high School in Baltimore, MD. George proudly served his country by enlisting in the U.S Army. After George’s term of enlistment ended, he returned, and continue working for Slanter’s Company of Baltimore, Md. In 1953 George started working for Bethlehem Steel and retired after 35 years. He married the love of his life Gloria H. Ruffins on January 12, 1957. Their 63 years together showed us a perfect marriage is two imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other. Out of that union three children were born, Tambera, Tangela, and Marco. George was one of the greatest gifts we ever had from god we call him dad, grandpa, poppa bear, and formally George Dunbar. An honorable man who served our country and led our family. A captivating storyteller that has lived through multiple eras. He could always be found in the kitchen cooking sharing his recipes, and many life experiences. He was a father who worked tirelessly, and happily sacrifice his comfort for the benefit of his family. There is no amount of thanks that will be enough for a father’s patience, love, understanding, and acceptance. He is survived by his two daughters Tambera Dunbar; Tangela Dunbar; and one son Marco Dunbar. In addition to his children, he is survived by grandchildren Lashane Dunbar, Tinnell Dunbar, Janel West, Dexter Hayes, Derrick Hayes, Marco Dunbar Jr., and Raven Williams; nine great grand kids; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Charles Thornton, Mother Irabell Dunbar- Thornton. Dad He was the champion of my dreams And his love was my light. He weathered life’s storms With an unsinkable strength And unshakable love He silently sacrificed Fiercely protected & lovingly shared. He taught by example and He lived by the truth. His legacy is the wonderful life he built And the love he left written on my heart.
