Gari Holmes Dewitt

In Remembrance of Our Beloved Gari Holmes Dewitt, 50, of Richmond, Virginia was called home to the Gates of Heaven on September 19, 2015. She was born the second child to Phyllis Holmes and Les Roberson in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She was preceded in death by her brother, Roland Holmes. Gari relocated from New Jersey to Richmond in 1976 with her mother and siblings. Gari was educated in the Richmond Public Schools system and attended John Marshall High School. At a young age Gari met and later married Curtis Lee Dewitt. From that union one daughter and four sons were born, Curtis, Latisha, Michael, Marcus and Sean, which she adored. In 2015, she dedicated her life to Christ and joined Mountain of Blessings Christian Center, under the leadership of Dr. Dimitri Bradley. She welcomed the Sunday morning spiritual blessings she was receiving and was glad that she took the steps of enhancing her journey. Instead of working for anyone else, she worked in the family painting and construction business, C.L. Dewitt & Sons. That was a trade she learned from her husband. Gari will be remembered most for being a caregiver to everyone, especially to her grandchildren and the special unconditional care she provided for them. She was a genuine, person that put others before herself and shared the love to others. Gari also went out of her way to make others happy, no one went without when she was around. If you needed something, all you had to do was ask. She was a quiet, laid back person that enjoyed cooking, especially her famous pepper steak and rice meal among other great dishes which her children loved. Family was most important to her and she relished always being around them. She was devoted to her family and felt very strongly about bridging family gaps, building bonds and treasured long-lasting friendships. Gari loved music and enjoyed watching her Black movies, Martin and Tyler Perry plays. Gari will always be remembered as a kind mother, a devoted and loving daughter, sister; and loyal friend. Left to cherish a bounty of caring memories is her daughter, Latisha Dewitt (Tyshawn); four sons, Curtis Holmes (Mary), Michael (Tanisha), Marcus (Special) and Sean Dewitt; 34 grandchildren; loving parents, Phyllis S. Taylor (Arthur) and Les Roberson Jr.; siblings, Traci Hewson, Sikkim Holmes (Regina), Charles Ritchie, Annette, Robert, Karen, Marshall, and Makeda Roberson; adored grandparents, Walter and Mattie Smith; devoted aunts, C. Joyce Wiggan, Ethel Bellamy and Jackie Hughes-Parker; loving uncles, Duane Smith and Albert Roberson; beloved nephew, Michael L. Goodnight; devoted nephew, Rickey Dewitt; godchild, Tyrell Birchett; caring cousins, Kelly, Michael, Marc and Missy; former husband, Curtis Lee Dewitt; devoted friend, Marcus Jones; and a host of other relatives and caring friends.
