Cleola Crump Wright
December 13, 1954 - April 6, 2022
Our beloved Cleola Gretta Crump Wright (Cleo) of Hampton, VA passed away with her family by her side on Wednesday, April 6, 2022. Cleola was born on December 13, 1954, to the late Robert L. Crump, Sr., and Christine Brown Crump. She was raised in New Kent, VA, and graduated from New Kent High School in 1973. Cleola accepted Christ as her savior at an early age and remained a faithful member of New Elam Baptist Church in New Kent. In her youth, she sang in the choir, and as an adult, she served on the Missionary Committee and studied with the Women's Ministry. For more than a decade, the Black History Month celebration was Cleola's pride and joy. The celebration included observing the contributions of African Americans, singing old Negro spirituals, wearing African attire, and feasting on traditional soul food. Cleo loved being able to fellowship with her church family. When Sunday services shifted to virtual services due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cleo looked forward to ZOOMing in because she could attend church with her New Elam family every Sunday. With an excited voice, Cleola always greeted the church with, "Good Morning! Hampton, Virginia!" It was received with smiles and light laughter because they all knew that was her way of spreading her joy and they looked forward to it. After a long courtship, Cleola united in holy matrimony with her very own "Mr. Right'', Reverend Douglas F. Wright, Sr. a longtime family friend on July 5, 2012. The informal ceremony was officiated by the person who introduced them, Rev. Dr. Solomon Wesley, cousin of the bride and dear friend of the groom. They shared a love for the beach and one of their favorite places to visit was Ocean City, Maryland. Reverend Wright preceded Cleola in death on August 10, 2019. Cleola was devoted to her family and friends and always made herself available during times of need. The role of caretaker seemed to suit her naturally. She had unbreakable strength in the worst of times, always seeking to protect and comfort her family. Her life's purpose seemed to pray for, love, and protect her family. Even as her time on Earth was nearing an end, Cleola sought to comfort her family by saying, "You will be okay. Stay together. I love you." Her faith in God never wavered as she repeated, "God is Good," and waited for the response, "All the time, God is Good." Cleola is survived by her two brothers, Robert L. Crump, Jr. (Elendar), Lawrence J. Crwnp, and devoted sister Patricia C. Taylor, all of Richmond, VA, stepson Douglas Wright, Jr. (Celia), of Hampton, VA; one uncle, Thomas E. Crump., Sr., of Lanexa, VA; three aunts Corine Whiting of Barhamsville, VA; Gladys C. Johnson of Richmond, VA; and Mahalia Crump of Brooklyn, NY; one great aunt Fannie W. Burrell of Lanexa, VA; devoted cousin and best friend Linda Taylor Fultz of New Kent, VA; one godson Matthew G. Fultz of Indianapolis, IN; several bonus grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
