In Her Legacy Deacon Carolyn Elaine Brown Hairston was born on January 15, 1947, in East Spencer, NC to Ulysses Sylvester Brown and Josie Evelyn Slade Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is a graduate of Winston Salem State University. In August 1969, she moved to Richmond, VA where she joined the undergraduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. She also attended Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia State University. She taught in the Richmond City Public Schools System from 1969 to 2006 where she was an elementary classroom teacher and later became a Title I Mathematics teacher. Carolyn was a member of the following organizations: Second Baptist Church West End Diaconate Ministry, Georgia Ross Ushers Board, Jones-Parker Missionary Circle #4, the Women’s Fellowship Bible Class of Richmond and Vicinity, the Deacons’ Conference of Richmond and Vicinity, the Ushers’ Union of Richmond and Vicinity, the Unique Sisters Club, the National Education Association (NEA), the Virginia Education Association (VEA), the Richmond Education Association (REA) Retired, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM), the Greater Richmond Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GRCTM), Women and Mathematics Education (WME), and the Benjamin Banneker Association, Inc. (BBA). She had a love for math and teaching children. Her favorite things to do were going on trips, especially to mathematics conferences, making greeting cards, searching the internet, and taking care of her grandchildren. On July 17, 2022, she was called home to the gates of heaven. Carolyn leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, James F. Hairston; two loving daughters, Keshia H. Butler (Michael) and Jamesha N. Hairston, all of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren, Mia R. Butler, Michael A. Butler, Jr. and Miles J. Butler, all of Richmond, VA; siblings, Gregory S. Brown (Linda) of Greensboro, NC, Lillie B. Rainey of High Point, NC, and Marilyn Brown of Salisbury, NC; sisters-in-law, Virginia Hairston and Eloise Hairston, both of Lexington, NC, and Carol C. Hairston of Laurel, MD; brother-in-law, S. Darnell Hairston (Ernestine) of Lexington, NC; a devoted cousin, Rosalind Ramzan (Arnold) of Granite Quarry, NC; a devoted friend, Betsy Smith (Thomas) of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and caring friends.
