Wylie McDaniel

Wylie McDaniel, Jr. affectionately known by family and friends as “Bay Boy,” was born March 18, 1933 in Blackstone, South Carolina. Wylie’s proud parents Wylie Sr. and Lola M. McDaniel knew that God had truly blessed the family with his arrival. On Tuesday night October 28, 2003 in the quiet of the night God stopped by Union Memorial Hospital and saw that Wylie was ready to move from labor to reward. God gently spoke and Wylie heard his call.Whylie moved to Baltimore, Maryland at an early age and received his early education at Thomas G. Hayes Elementary School. At the age of twelve he returned to South Carolina and continued his education.Wylie made his commitment to Christ and was baptized at the age of twelve into the Antioch Baptist Church, in South Carolina where his loving grandmother, Annie Gladden, could nourish him in the Word of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When Wylie relocated to Baltimore he soon united with Saint Paul Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. George A. Crawley Jr. Later Wylie joined the Mount Tabor Baptist Church under leadership of Rev. William Mayo. After a number of years Wylie and his bride returned to Saint Paul Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the Male Chorus and the Senior Usher Board until God spoke and his reward began.In 1948 Wylie met and courted Johnnie Mae Mobley. This courtship ended and the marriage began on January 27, 1951. Out of this fruitful union four children were born. Omit the ups and downs ins and outs, Wylie and Johnnie remained together for 52 years, applying and following the principals of marriage dictated by God.Knowing his responsibility to his family, Whylie found employment at the then Bethlehem Steel Company located in Sparrows Point, Maryland in 1952. There he served faithfully until he retired in 1989, having a total of 37 years of service.Wylie had a special love for this family and friends---always the “peacemaker”. A verse from the song Keep Me Every Day is a song that would depict his spirit.“Lord, I want to live for thee, Every day and hour; let thy spirit be with me, in its saving power! Keep my heart and keep my hand, keep my soul, I pray! Keep my tongue to speak thy praise, keep me all the way.”His son Larry R. McDaniel Sr. preceded him in death on September 9, 2002.Wylie Jr. leaves to cherish his legacy: a loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Johnnie Mae McDaniel; his father, Wylie McDaniel Sr.; his children, Linda Darnell McDaniel, Reginald McDaniel Sr. and Laverne Marshall; one son-in-law, Leon A. Marshall Jr.; nine grandchildren, Larry R. McDaniel Jr., Nakia L. McDaniel, Melissa McDaniel, Richard A. Robinson Jr., Reginald McDaniel Jr., Tavon McDaniel, Ryan Lee Marshall and Ashley Nicole Marshall; one great-grandchild, Caelon Robinson; one sister, Rebecca Wagstaff; five aunts, Johnnie Mae Gladden, Annie McClurkin, Helen Wallace and Rosalee Gladden all of South Carolina and Daisy Lee Mobley of Baltimore; three uncles, Edward Gladney, Morris Cockrell and Adolphus Wallace all of South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
