Winifred Lonesome

Winifred Montgomery Lonesome was born October 20, 1916 in Charles Town, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late William and Lilly Montgomery.Winifred lived with her father and mother and her two sisters, Angelique and Gwendolyn in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She received her formal education in the Harrisburg City Public School System. She graduated from John Harris High School.After high school, Winifred moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she went on to attend and graduate from the Apex School of Beauty Culture.On May 14, 1939, she was united in marriage to the late Leroy Albert Lonesome, sr. Of this union, one son, Leroy, Jr. was born.During World War II, Winifred worked at Glenn L. Aircraft Company, welding ailerons for bombers. During the Korean War, she worked in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, at the Naval Supply Depot located there. Winifred was extremely proud of the service she was able to provide for her country.For twenty-nine years Winifred worked as an investigator for the Department of Defense. While there, her faithful and dedicated service to her country was evidenced by the any letters of recognition and awards received from various agencies within the Department of Defense to which she was assigned. The Defense Department benefited immensely by her personal efforts and her competent, professional manner. She retired honorably from service on November 25, 1983.She was a longtime member of Union Memorial United Methodist Church. She loved the Lord and her church, and when her health permitted, was active in some ministries there. Winifred was affectionately known by her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews as “Bobo.” She loved watching sap operas, crocheting, baking and cooking delicious meals for her family.Winifred fell asleep on September 1, 2004, in Jesus, with the blessed hope that she would soon be reunited with her husband, father, mother, brother, and sisters in Gory! She is deeply and sadly missed by her son Leroy, Jr.; her grandsons, Steve, Tony and Craig; great grandsons, Tony, Jr., and Dae Quan; great granddaughters, Britni, Tymani, Dawntasia, Camira, Jeanee’, and Aaliyah; a daughter-in-law, Claudette Lonesome of North Carolina; two brothers-in-law, Chester L. Adair of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Clayton Washington, Sr. of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and a host of nieces, nephews and numerous other family members and friends.
