Willie Lipscomb

WILLIE ADD LIPSCOMB was born in Halifax County, Virginia on December 27, 1926 to the late Add and Halle Adams-Lipscomb. He was the tenth of eleven children. Willie was baptized at an early age at the New Bethel Baptist Church in South Boston, Virginia and was educated in the Halifax County School System. After high school, Willie wanted to be near his siblings Lonnie and Mary, so he decided to move to Baltimore, Maryland. While exploring Baltimore, Willie began working for Bethlehem Steel Corporation in their Coke Oven Division, where he worked for thirty years. While living in Baltimore, Willie met and married his soulmate, Harriet. Harriet and Willie loved to travel, go out to dinner, go out to the casinos and loved to host events, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner at their home. Willie loved traveling to North Carolina and Pennsylvania where he loved to pick his peaches, watermelon and apples. Also in his spare time Willie loved to work on cars. He could be seen frequently in his alley working on his car, his neighbors’ cars and family members’ cars. Willie was such a loving and warm-hearted person who would do anything for his family, friends, neighbors and even people he would meet on the street. He was dependable, funny and loved his wife Harriet’s cooking. He especially loved spending time with his grandson “Lil Quint.” As Willie’s health began to decline, he stayed home a lot more and watched his old fashioned westerns. Willie shared almost thirty-five years with his beloved Harriet, until God needed a new Angel in His Kingdom. On Saturday, March 24, 2012, the gates opened for Willie to come home and leave his suffering behind. Ten siblings whom preceded him in death, John, James, Henry, Mary, Blanche, Lottie, Ada, Lonnie, Ivy and baby sister, Halle Pearl. Willie leaves to mourn: his beloved and devoted wife, Harriet; daughter, Willie Mae Lipscomb; five very close to his heart grandchildren, Quinton Lathan, Deborah Ham (Jerry), Kenneth Lathan, Frank Lathan Jr. and Valerie Williams (Derry); sisters-in-law, Edna Jackson (Lester), Dorothy Hall (John), and Mabel Best; brothers-in-law, James Black (Anne), Michael Black (Alice) and James Roland Flood (Betty-Jean); a grandson who was so special to his heart, Quinton Lathan Jr.; a mother-in-law whom he loved to visit and eat her good food, including his all time favorite coconut cake, Saloma Black; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
