William Harris McCray

Very quietly and peacefully on Tuesday morning, 23 July 2024, the almighty God in his infinite wisdom, gently closed the eyes of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle, William Harris McCray. William, son of the late Willie McCray and Lugenia Eaddy McCray and stepson of the late Josephine Dickey McCray, was born July 27, 1946, in New Zion, SC. Two sisters-Cecilia McCray and Laura Burgess and two brothers-Willard McCray and Lee Ernest McCray preceded him in death. He received his formal education at Walker Gamble High School in Turberville, SC where he was a standout athlete in baseball, basketball and football. He played semi-pro football with the Baltimore Rams. He received an Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration from Baltimore City Community College. In his youth, William accepted Christ and joined Howard Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina. He later affiliated with Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. He met his future wife Argyrie while attending a church service at Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church. William and Argyrie Taylor were married on October 6, 1978. Prior to joining New Antioch, he was a member of Enon Baptist Church. William was a faithful member of New Antioch Baptist Church of Randallstown from 2004 until his health declined. William was a former employee of the Baltimore Department of Social Services, Woodstock Job Corps and later the United States Social Security Administration. He retired from the Social Security Administration in 2008 after 27 years of service. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War era (1967-1969). He joined the 818th Maintenance US Army Reserve Unit in 1978. His reserve unit was deployed during Operation Desert Storm in 1990. He retired from 818th Maintenance around 2009. William was a man of many talents. He did modeling with Travis Winkey (Baltimore’s Black Prince of Fashion); loved cooking and enjoyed preparing “BIG” meals especially for holidays; coached all the sporting activities that his children participated in. Most importantly he loved the Lord and didn’t mind having a “serious” conversation about the Lord with any and every one he encountered. One of his favorite Bible scriptures is Psalm 91. William made numerous friends wherever he went and will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew him. William leaves to cherish his life and precious memories a loving and devoted wife Argyrie T. McCray of the home; two daughters Sonya Mitchell of Windsor Mill, MD and Amanda McCray of Randallstown, MD; one son William A. McCray (fiancée Medea ) of Baltimore, MD; five grandchildren-Garfield M. Griffin IV, Deonte J. Griffin Sr., Jaquan M. Griffin, Grace Gabrielle Nore, and William Prince Kennedy McCray; two great grandchildren Deonte J. Griffin Jr. and Denim J. Griffin; two sisters Laura Brogden of Euless, TX and Willie Jean Singleton of Brooklyn, New York; two brothers John McCray of Conyers, GA and Rev. Jerome McCray of Manning, SC; sister-in-law Johnnie Mae McCray of Kingstree, SC; Stepsisters Evelyn Witherspoon (Joseph) of Gable, SC, Vivoliette Knight (David) of Sumter, SC, Luethonia Jackson (David) of Bridgeport, CT, Oretta Durant (Joe) of Redding, PA and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
