William Mack Jr.

William Mack Jr., of Thomasville, Georgia, passed away on July 6, 2026 at the age of 83. Born on July 4, 1943, in Thomasville, GA, William was the beloved son of the late William Mack Sr. and Nancy Hopkins. He grew up in the local community and confessed his faith at an early age. He pursued higher education at Benedict College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business. During his collegiate years, William was a dedicated and courageous participant in the civil rights movement, boldly standing up for equality by participating in lunch counter sit-ins. In August 1965, William answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He completed his medical training at the USA Medical Training Center between November 1965 and January 1966, where he qualified as a Medical Corpsman. Dedicated to the care of his fellow service members, he served honorably as a Medical Specialist and was assigned to the Attendants Hospital. During his military career, William was stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and served overseas in Vietnam, contributing a year of active foreign service. For his dedication, bravery, and meritorious service, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 1960, and the National Defense Service Medal. He also achieved a Marksman qualification with the rifle before being honorably discharged from active duty in August 1967 and transferring to the Army Reserves. Following his honorable military service, William returned home and embarked on a beautiful new chapter of life. On July 25, 1968, he was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Ida Dunbar, in Thomas County, Georgia beginning a journey filled with love, family, and lifelong companionship. William cherished his children and grandchildren. On the weekends, he traveled throughout New York to support his sons as they competed in bike races. When his grandchildren came along, he treasured spending holidays and summers with them, creating lasting memories as he took them to different parks and enjoyed precious time together. William went on to dedicate nearly two decades of his life to serving his community as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service in Garden City, New York. Known by his colleagues and supervisors as a model employee, he performed his duties at the highest level of efficiency and was deeply respected by the customers on his route for his professionalism and constant willingness to help others. His exceptional performance earned him multiple USPS Special Achievement Awards in 1996 and 2003, as well as an official Certificate of Appreciation in February 2003. Beyond his daily dedication, William proved to be a true hero. In 2003, while delivering mail on his route, he was confronted with a life-threatening house fire. Acting purely out of protective instinct, William attempted to enter the smoke-filled home to rescue an elderly customer. Driven back by heavy smoke, he quickly coordinated with a nearby NY firefighter, and together they successfully pulled the elderly man to safety. For this profound act of bravery, he was officially honored with a Special Achievement Award for heroism. William will be remembered for his intellect, his academic achievements, his lifelong commitment to justice and community service, courageous spirit and honorable service to his nation, and the loving time he devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Ida Dunbar Mack; his two sons, Gary Mack and William Mack III (Monica); his cherished grandchildren, William “Halaj” Mack IV (Heather), Jalah Mack, and Jaleah Mack. He is also survived by his sister, Florine Rattliff, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Mack Sr. and Nancy Hopkins.
