William Hayward

To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 Our beloved, life journey here on earth has ended but his new life has just begun. William Hayward, 67, of Richmond, Virginia (formerly of Brooklyn, New York) departed this life on May 28, 2010 to meet his heavenly father and join his loved ones who await his arrival. He was born February 15, 1943 to the late Elmore and Annie Hayward. William was preceded in death by his four siblings, Samuel, Paul, Gregory and Wendy. As a child, he attended public schools 44 and 35, Junior High School 258 and attended Boys High School in New York. In 1961, William married his childhood sweetheart and of his life, Joyce Lee Veney and from their union four daughters, Alesia, Sherice, Kandis and Ashanté were born. William enlisted in the National Guard in 1962 and later was drafted into the United States Army where he served his country proud for six years. Two years of service were served in Germany where he became a paratrooper and learned his profession of cooking. He mastered his skills at Cumberland Hospital, St. Vincent’s Home for Boys and Lutheran Medical Center. After retirement, the Haywards moved to Richmond, Virginia where life was good. Although he enjoyed Richmond, he let it be known that you could not take the Brooklyn out of him. William enjoyed life to the fullest and managed to touch each and everyone he knew in his unique way. William and Joyce had an “OUT OF SIGHT” bond and always put God first and taught their children and grandchildren to do the same. He was baptized and was a member of St. Paul’s Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. His prayers kept us on the right track and his wise words will guide us for the rest of our lives. He was a strong, caring, compassionate, loving, protecting and very devoted husband to his to his family. William was affectionately known as “Bayboy” to his family and friends. He maintained a healthy balance of work and always kept busy. Anyone who met William will never forget his enthusiasm for life, sweet spirit, and the warm, loving friend he was to many. William leaves behind to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife, Joyce L. Hayward; four daughters, Alesia Salas (Carl), Sherice H. Albin (Dana), Kandis Hayward and Ashanté J. Thompson (Jason); 15 grandchildren, Nayrice, M’Shari, Rigoberto, Napoleon, William, Deja, DuWan, Samia, Seth, Kiajai, Mia, Iri, Keanu, TeShandell, JaQuan and Jason; two great-grandchildren, Mhilaé and Niem; three godchildren, Denise, Kevon and Mark Anthony; four sisters, Marian, Mary “Dinkel”, Rose “MaeMae” and Pauline “Boody”; two brothers, Saul and Elmore “Ricky”, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Legacy of Love A husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a friend too. This is the legacy we have from you. You taught us love. You gave us strength, you gave us might. A stronger person would be hard to find. And in your heart you were always kind. You fought for us all in one way or another, not just as a husband or father. For all of us, you gave your best, now the time has come for you to rest. So go in peace, you have earned your sleep, your love in our hearts we will eternally keep. ~The Family~
