William C. Grant

WILLIAM CLIFTON GRANT SR., born in Philadelphia, PA on August 14, 1926 to Sherman Grant Sr. and Lula Chamberlain, departed this life after a short illness on January 26, 2014. William was educated in both Philadelphia and Baltimore public schools. He joined the United States Army in 1945; he was honorable discharged in 1946. He married Evelyn Olivia Adams in December of 1947; three children came from this union, Evelyn, Patricia, and William. William had many nicknames — Bo, Bozo, Jim, Jim Dandy. He had many jobs — laborer, card dealer, cut rate operator, lottery taker, bus driver and hacker. His hobbies included golf, encouraging and watching his grandchildren play sports, and playing cards of all kinds especially pinochle single and double deck. He had a many friends that he shared good times with. Preceding him in death are his son, William Grant Jr.; wives, Evelyn O. Davis and Margaret Grant; sisters, Frances Douglas and Dorothy Collette; brothers, Wallace George Smith, Charles Smith, Sherman Grant Jr. and James Douglas Grant. He leaves to mourn: his sister, Louise Pack; two daughters, Evelyn Watkins (Leonard Willis) (Charles Watkins Sr.), Patricia Ragin (William Ragin); five grandchildren, Lamont Strong (Lori Strong), Pamela Bradshaw (Rajeim Bradshaw), Charles Watkins Jr. (Kita Brown-Watkins), Nicole Ragin-Williams (Kelvin Williams Sr.), Monica White (Deshawn White); seventeen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends including a special friend, Martha Hamlin. The blow was hard, the shock severe, I never thought of death so near, But only those who’ve lost can tell The pain of parting without farewell.
