William G. Coleman

William Gregory Coleman, son of the late Mary Elizabeth and William James Coleman, was born on March 22, 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on February 12, 2004 after a lengthy illness.Greg, as family and friends knew him, married the former Clara Keller (deceased), and out of this union six children were born; four sons, William Gregory Jr. (deceased), Martin, Patrick, Xavier (deceased) and two daughters.William Coleman received his education in Catholic Schools as well as Dunbar High School. At the age of nineteen, he became employed as a shipfitter/welder at Sparrows Point Shipyard, interrupted only by serving in the United States Navy during World War II. He received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy and continued employment at Bethlehem Steel Company as a Scrap Distributor and Steel Stock before he was later promoted. After forty-five years of service, he retired and was employed by the Department of Social Service in security for a short period of time.Mr. Coleman, as he was fondly called, was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Francis Xavier and present member of St. Veronica Catholic Church. He received honors of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus, March 28, 1976 and the Knights of Columbus Certificate of Merit, September 15, 2000. Since Mr. Coleman was an active participant in community and church activities, he received numerous awards and certificates: Eucharistic Minister, Certificate of Extraordinary Minister of Communion, Pastoral Visitor and Certificate of Appreciation from the Ministry of Hospitality are but a few of his many honors.He made numerous friends wherever he went and will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew or just recognized him. His wisdom and humor were treasures he freely gave. He was always a true friend and devoted family man. Mr. Coleman’s wife, Clara Coleman, two sons, William Coleman Jr. and Xavier Coleman preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn, yet cherish his memory: two sons, Patrick and Martin Coleman; two daughters; two sisters, Rita Church and Mary Ann Burley; four grandchildren, Patrick Jr., Antoine, Tasha and Nataya; sixty nieces and nephews, fifty-five great-nieces and nephews, twenty great-great-nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law, two daughters-in-law, a host of devoted cousins and other relatives and friends.
