William Eugene Goodall

To know him was to Respect him – to respect him was to Appreciate him – to appreciate him was to Love him. On Saturday, August 10, 2002 William Eugene Goodall passed away at the Levindale Rehabilitation Center, Baltimore Maryland after a short illness. William (AKA “Gene”, “Cookie” or Goody”) was born on August 27, 1932 to the late Eugene and Lillian (Jones) Goodall in Washington, DC. And was educated in public and parochial schools. He was known for his love for people and most all his family, being a loving husband and a dedicated father. Gene was a member of the St. Martin’s Roman Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. Upon moving to Baltimore; he became a member of the New All Saints Catholic Church. He was faithful member of the New All Saints Men’s Club and took great pride in assisting in various fund raising events. He began his outstanding accomplishments as an athlete while attending Phelps Vocational High School in Washington, D.C. Upon graduating in 1951, he received an Athletic Scholarship to attend Delaware State University (DSU) where he played and excelled in football, basketball and baseball. Gene received a Bachelor of Science degree from Delaware State University and later earned his masters degree at Coppin State College. Because of his accomplishment at DSU, the university extended the high honor of inducting him into the DSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame on November 15, 1986. Gene became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. while in undergraduate school. He was devoted to the community service and brotherly love principles of the organization and willingly served the fraternity in an outstanding manner. He held the positions as Vice-Polemarch and Strategus at the undergraduate level and as Strategus and Dean of Pledges at the graduate level. As Dean of Pledges he sponsored two graduate lines and two undergraduate lines in two years. He was also Chairman of Kappa Vegas Souvenir Booklet for four years and was a member of various committees, such as, Golf, Awards, Pledge, Guide Right, House Rental Agent, Valentine/Sweetheart Party Chairman, Kappa Vegas and Hospitality. On May 11, 2002, Gene was enthusiastically pinned by the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Polemarch in recognition of fifty years of service. Gene believed in his community and devoted many hours of service in support of various activities and often served in leadership positions. His service included being President of Baltimore area DSU Alumni Association, President of the “Royal Order of the Herald” Social Club, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Ashburton Neighborhood Association; the “ No Name” Social Club and the National Old-timers, Inc. On May 22, 1965, Gene married the “love of his life”, Marcella Jane Minor. From this union, they were blessed with a daughter, Sherri. He was also the proud father of three other daughters from a previous marriage, Leona, Renee “ Yomi,” and Rhonda. A son Roddrick predeceases him. Gene served in the US Navy in the fifties and was honorably discharged in 1962. Gene’s life –long career centered around public service. He began his work at the Social Security Administration as a claims authorizer and later became and instructor in the Office of Training. After thirty years of service Gene retired in 1986 holding a position as program analyst at that time. Because of his love for learning and imparting knowledge. Gene continued to provide public service after retirement by teaching in the Price George Community College and also serving as a teacher for homebound students in the Baltimore City School System. Because of Gene’s friendly nature, he met and became long lasting friends to many and he was also a mentor for the young and others who needed him. All of who will forever cherish his memories along with his loving family. He leaves to cherish those memories his adoring wife, Marcella, his devoted daughters, Sherri Goodall, Silver Spring, MD, Leona Goodall, Washington, DC, Rhonda Goodall, Las Vegas, NY; and Renee Goodall, Atlanta, GA; brother-in-law, Jesse L. Byrd, III, five grandchildren, Breanna Goodall-Fleming, Arash Goodall, Morgan Goodall-Scoot, Erik Goodall and Darlene Rando and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
