Wayne Eric Dabney

In Loving Memory Born in King and Queen County, Virginia, Wayne Dabney was the youngest of four children born to the late Leon Dabney and Ollie Dabney Kelly. He was raised in a home built by his father and older brother, Melvin, where he spent his early childhood before the family later relocated to Richmond, Virginia. Wayne leaves behind his loving siblings, Melvin Dabney and Katherine Scott. From a young age, Wayne worked with his hands. He enjoyed helping in the fields and working as a farmhand, taking pride in the many chores that came with rural life. Sundays were especially meaningful—spent traveling with family to Papa and Big Mama’s home, where relatives gathered for shared meals, laughter, and fellowship. Wayne was baptized at an early age at First Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he attended Sunday School and proudly contributed his nickel or dime offering. His faith, rooted early in life, would be something he looked to for guidance, comfort and connection. Wayne completed his primary education at Lawson-Marriott Elementary School in King and Queen County and later graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia. He continued his education at Strayer Business College and earned a Certificate of Completion in Industrial Maintenance from the Richmond Adult Evening Technical Center. He was also awarded a letter of recognition from Prince George Community College for completing coursework in Delivery Quality of Life. In 1977, Wayne answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. He attained the rank of Lance Corporal and proudly and honorably served as a Transportation Officer at the White House and Camp David during the administration of President Jimmy Carter. Cleared by the Defense Intelligence Service, Wayne was entrusted with transporting high-ranking civilian and military personnel. He earned specialized certifications in Military Functions in Civil Disturbances and Safe Driving Achievement. While stationed in California, his unit was affectionately known as the “Hollywood Marines.” Following an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps and the receipt of a Good Conduct Medal, Wayne continued his career of service. He worked at the International Monetary Fund, where he was responsible for the safety and well-being of IMF members, visitors, and the building itself. He later served with the Eccles Security Agency, protecting personnel and property for several federal agencies, including the Departments of Commerce and Treasury, as well as the National Arboretum. Wayne also dedicated ten years of service to the United States Postal Service as a General Expeditor and General Clerk. During this time, he received a commendation for reporting to work under severe weather conditions. His supervisor praised his sacrifice, dedication, and commitment, noting that employees like Wayne exemplified the very best of USPS nationwide. Ready to take on new challenges, Wayne put his handyman skills to use as a Maintenance Technician at Hunter Point Apartments. He also spent many years working alongside his brother and nephew at D & H Painting & Wall Covering, contributing his talents in homes, hospitals, and apartment buildings alike. Throughout his life, Wayne lived in several states, including Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Missouri, and Washington, DC. At various times, he resided with his beloved sister Lena in Maryland and later with his brother Melvin in Hanover, Virginia. While living in Washington, DC, Wayne was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church. Wayne had a deep love for music, enjoying R&B, jazz, blues, and gospel. He not only listened but loved to sing, touching hearts when he performed “Stand by Me” at his sister Kathy’s 60th birthday celebration—a moment that touched many. A devoted sports fan, Wayne enthusiastically supported the Washington Commanders and rarely missed an opportunity to watch a game. He even worked at the stadium where home games were played. Golf was another favorite pastime, and he shared a special bond over soccer with his cousin Carlos. Wayne enjoyed socializing with friends, trying his luck at casinos, and staying connected with loved ones across the miles. Always quick with a hug, a warm smile, or a funny story, he was known for his generosity, his willingness to lend a hand, and his ability to fix just about anything—especially in the kitchen. His laughter was contagious, and his presence brought comfort and joy. Family meant everything to Wayne. In his later years, he was lovingly cared for by his family, with his sister Kathy serving as his devoted primary caregiver. He lived with his brother Melvin until he gained his wings surrounded by those who loved him most. Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Lena Williams. He leaves to cherish his memory: his brother, Melvin Dabney; his sister, Katherine Scott; his brother-in-law, William Dover Scott, Jr.; nieces Shannon Dabney, Katina Scott, Kim Williams, and Candice Scott; nephew Melvin Dabney, Jr. and his wife Cheryl; Christopher Williams and his wife Angela; great-nieces Tiffany Dabney, Tabitha Dabney, and Daria Nicolas; aunts Annie Johnson, Frances Davis, and Caroline Robinson; uncle Galveston Johnson and his wife Carolyn; uncle Timothy Thomas; and a host of cousins, friends, and loved ones. Wayne lived with compassion, faith, and resilience. Through every trial and tribulation, he overcame by the word of his testimony and by the blood of the Lamb—Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. His life was filled with love, faith, and family, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
