Walter Derwin Wright

Walter D. Wright, son of the late Walter H. Winston and Ruth Carter Winston was born on March 16, 1926, in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on May 24, 2002, after a lengthy illness. He received his education in the Baltimore City Public School System and Catonsville Community College. Upon completing his education, he then joined the United States Air Force on September 1, 1944 and was honorably discharged. He married Doris March and out of this union two children were born, Michael and Gregory. He later married Shirley Bailey and out of this union one child were born, Kimberly Simone. He worked many years as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Services. Walter was a man of many talents and abilities, and worked as an Architectural Designer for a number of firms in Maryland. He was an accomplished musician and played drums for many local bands throughout Baltimore and the East Coast Region one the United States. He played under the (K.K.A.) “Rico.” He was very much involved in the Stevenswood Community by serving as a Captain of the Neighborhood Watch Association and was instrumental as an advisor in the design and development of the Northwest Hospital Day Care Center. In January 1979, he married Maria Mercier-Avel with whom he shared the last twenty-three years of his life. After his retirement, he devoted his life to his grandchildren and music. There was nothing too big or too demanding for Walter Wright to take on for his grandchildren. He was an outstanding Assistant Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #496 and volunteered to serve as chaperone on camping trips and school trips. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He leaves to mourn his wife, Maria E. Wright; one daughter, Kimberly S. Gross; one son, Michael D. Wright; and he was pre-deceased by one son, Gregory D. Wright (AKA) Hazim Abul-Ghaffar; one sister, Millie I, Barber; four stepchildren, Stephen C. Sye, Dominique Y. Sye, Jonathan P. Abel, and Adam B. Abel; two daughters-in-law, Jeannie R. Wright, and Tamber R. Wright; and eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
