For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven Ecclesiastes 3:1 A time to be born… Walter C. “Jasper” Barrett, Sr., was born August 17, 1919, to the late Alice and William Henry Barrett. He was affectionately called “Jasper”, a name given to him after the preacher John Jasper. A time to love…While visiting with a co-worker during his lunch break, Jasper met the love of his life, Elizabeth. His friend asked him if he would sing a song. Jasper, quite the vocalist, belted out the lyrics to the song “So Long, I hope we will meet again” and a courtship began shortly thereafter. A time to plant…From this union, came three dedicated children, Monsignor Walter C. Barrett, Jr., Douglas J. Barrett, Sr. and Alice C. Barrett Robinson. A time to build….Jasper was educated in the Richmond Public School System. Even as a young man, he knew the importance of hard work. He was a self taught carpenter. He was also employed by both Main Street Station & Leggett Myers Tobacco Company. He ultimately retired from Sovran Bank at the age of 65, now known as Bank of America where he worked as a mail clerk. However Jasper’s strong work ethic wouldn’t allow him to sit still for long. So in 1998, he decided to rejoin the work force alongside his granddaughter as a security officer at Richmond International Airport. After working as a security officer for a short period, he retired. A time to dance…Jasper was an all around entertainer! He was known throughout his community for his tap dancing skills. He was also a member of The Memoirs Harmonizing Quartet. A time to scatter stones…Jasper was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus until his health would no longer allow him to actively participate. A time for peace… Walter C. Barrett, Sr. transitioned from labor to reward on July 24, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and William Henry Barrett; sister, Hattie B. Ward; and two brothers,William E. and James H. Barrett. He leaves to cherish his special memories, his loving and devoted wife, Elizabeth Norrell Barrett; two sons, Monsignor Walter C. Barrett, Jr., Douglas J. Barrett, Sr. (Iretha); daughter, Alice C. Barrett Robinson(Harry); seven grandchildren, Jumare C. Barrett, Douglas J. Coppedge, Carmen B. Jimenez, Kanika S. McBride, Douglas J. Barrett, Jr., Bridget L. Jackson, Omari A. Barrett; ten great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
