Vivian M. Gunter

Mrs. Vivian M. Gunter, affectionately known as Aunt Viv, transitioned from labor to reward on Monday, August 6, 2018. Vivian was born on August 28, 1935, in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Gertrude Matthews. Her four brothers and three sisters, to whom she was very close (Delores Matthews, Loretta Payne, Elizabeth Millner) preceded her in death. Vivian was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School. She continued her education, earning a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree from Antioch College and a Masters of Science Degree in Adult and Continuing Education from Coppin State College. She went on to work for the State of Maryland as a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Vivian’s mission was to treat, inspire, and promote wellness within the community. Early in life, she met and married the late Mr. Garrett Gunter and together they raised their family. Vivian’s relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ was unbreakable. She was a strong and stern God-fearing woman, allowing nothing to move her from her stance with the Lord. Her powerful walk with the Lord influenced all, specially her three daughters. She taught her family to trust in the Lord and lean not to their own understanding. She joined Christian Community Church of God in January 1979 under the leadership of the late Bishop Conway Green and continued to serve under his son, Dr. Melvin C. Green. She was a faithful member of the Sunday School Ministry, Noon Day Bible Study, Ushers Ministry, Missionary Ministry, and Evangelism Ministry Team. Beyond worship, Vivian spent time with her daughters, grandchildren and family, praying and interceding for others, enjoying outdoor activities, and challenging others to love themselves. Her loving and faithful memory will be cherished by her three daughters and sons-in-law, Shelia Stokes (Roger, Sr.), Paulette Johnson (Raymond) and Valerie Lewis (Glenn, whom preceded her in death); eight grandchildren, Kisha, Roger Jr., Sojourner, Derek, Tiffany, Troy, Christian, and Ashlynn; three great-grandchildren, Nija, Joshua, and Paityn; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
