Vernia Rice

VERNIA RICE was born on May 23, 1923 in Lunenburg County, Virginia to Hinda R. Jones and James L. Rice. Vernia had seven sisters and brothers who have also passed into the realm of the ancient ancestors.Vernia Rice received her education from the Baltimore City Public School system. Vernia attend Dunbar High School. Vernia's master crafts acquired were seamstress and presser at the historic Mount Royal Hotel located in downtown Baltimore. Vernia experienced and enjoyed more than 20 years of the clothing maintenance industry.Vernia's inherit people and socialization skills, and organizational skills opened doors for her into the Baltimore City Public school system as lead janitorial engineer managing a crew of 10 plus workers. Vernia retired with Baltimore city Public School System.After retirement Vernia's zest for life and elevation of community guided her to volunteer continuously within the community. Vernia played an instrumental role in the rehabilitation and renovation of Homewood House a senior community in East Baltimore in collaboration with Mayor Kurt Schmoke and Baltimore City officials.Vernia was also a very active community volunteer with Mary Pat Clarke's office of community affairs.For many years Ms. Vernia Rice has been a faithful and devoted member f St. Ann Catholic Church. After her retirement Ms. Rice managed the parish Outreach Center and Food Pantry which families and senior citizens in need. During her time at the Outreach Center a men's shelter was opened and Ms. Rice diligently worked with the men to find clothing and shoes for them. Ms. Rice was also concerned about the community and organized work teams to clean alleys and vacant lots. She ministered actively at the Center as long as she could, find God in the faces of those she served.Ms. Rice was a devoted mother and grandmother always providing a solid, structured, disciplined, and nurturing foundation from which to grow and flourish! Ms. Rice successfully raised three children, Ms. Rice, my grandmother, always provided guidance and direction coupled with life skills and genuine kindness and love. Ms Vernia Rice was salute you while your Ancient Ancestors welcome you into spirit realm.
