Vergie Church Jennings

VERGIE CHURCH JENNINGS was born on February 11, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Leroy Church and Georgia (Carter) Church. She departed this life on February 4, 2024. Vergie excelled in academics and was a three-sport athlete. She started school before she turned four, attended Baltimore City Public Schools, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Elementary School, Booker T. Washington Middle School, and Western High School. She married the love of her life, Larry E. Jennings, Sr. in 1960 after graduating high school. Her early adulthood was spent taking care of her young family. Later, she persisted in her pursuit of her academic dreams with success, graduating from Baltimore City Community College, and subsequently the University of Baltimore with a degree in business and finance. She dedicated her life to others. She worked for Baltimore City Public Schools as a permanent special education substitute while her children, Georgia, Larry, and Lance attended school. She ran her own sewing business from home for years. After graduating from the University of Baltimore, she worked as the Financial Manager for Park West Medical Center. She worked in telecommunications at MCI and Espire for 10 years as a corporate and government account manager. She worked briefly teaching sewing skills to special needs students at Baltimore County Community College. Vergie was a warrior for her family and friends. She supported Larry, Sr. as he built his business and they walked through life leaning against each other and taking care of their family. She always crocheted beautiful sweaters, hats, and booties for the family and friends’ babies. She loved to spend time at the Horseshoe funding public education with her girlfriends. She enjoyed spending time on the Eastern Shore in Oxford, MD sitting on the deck watching the sun set. She was, undoubtedly, the best “Granny.” When her grandchildren were small, she took them to Druid Hill Park, a favorite place, and taught them to love nature the same way she had done for her own children. She taught them about horticulture and gardening and took them to the park pool. She took them to the beach on long, hot summer afternoons. As they got older, she became a trusted confidant continuing to offer the same love and support. She lived her passion and saw her dreams come true as her children and grandchildren reached accomplishments. There was not a problem a family member or friend had that she did not provide support. The family thanks God for all the things she accomplished as their matriarch. Vergie leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Larry E. Jennings, Sr. Her three children, Georgia Marie Jennings, Larry E. Jennings, Jr., and Lance Jennings. Her favorite daughter-in-law, Katherine Jennings. Grandchildren, Jasmine Jennings, Jewel McKinley (Michael McKinley), Jessica Kuiper (Allen Kuiper), Jason Jennings, June Jennings, Tyshae Jennings, Delontae Jennings, Jade Jennings, Santino Jennings, Keara Bolden, and Carter Jennings. Great-grandchildren Erik Queen, Jr., Vade McKinley, and Ezra Walton. Siblings Thomas Church, Nicole Reed, and David Reid. She was preceded in death by siblings Leroy Church, Jr., Gardenia Church, Malinda Anderson, Arnold Church, Clifton Church, Howard Church, and Rusty Church. In addition to her close girlfriends, Mildred, Marguerite, Iris, and Stephanie, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
