Vera E. Wright

VERA ELIZABETH WRIGHT, daughter of the late Bertina and Milton Myers Sr., was born on November 4, 1926 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was called home to be with the Lord on December 13, 2021 after a brief illness. Vera was the third born out of her mother’s thirteen children. Vera was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. She worked odd jobs during the early years of her life. Vera was married to John Louis Wright on June 11, 1945 until he was called home to be with the Lord. From this union she was blessed with three children, Vernon Louis Wright, Vernice Francis Gross and the late Victor John Wright who was known as “Hammie”. From a relationship with the late Charles Gilbert Kess, she was blessed with two additional children, Gilda Victoria Kess and Carl Michael Kess. Vera was affectionately known as “Minnie” to family and friends. Her children and grandchildren called her “Mill”. Vera enjoyed caring for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, and listening to jazz music. Even though she was not a good singer, she would try to sing some of the jazz songs that she played. She also often told stories about how Nat King Cole tried to hit on her at a club in Baltimore when she was younger. However, Nat King Cole died before her children could verify it. As Vera got older and lost her eyesight, she became an avid sports fan. She would often listen to the Baltimore Orioles, Navy Football and the Baltimore Ravens on WBAL radio. She knew more players’ names on the Baltimore Orioles than her son Carl. He would tease her and jokingly tell her she was listening to a bunch of losers. Vera was sharp witted and had a keen memory, especially recalling someone’s birthdate. Vera will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Vera leaves to cherish her memory: her two sons, Vernon Wright and Carl Kess; two daughters, Vernice Gross and Gilda Kess; two sisters, Veronica Ragsdale and Bernadine Williams; brother, Ronald Myers; ten grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, twenty-nine great-greatgrandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
