Valerie D. Griffin

Valerie Denise Griffin, daughter of late Vernon Womble and Shirley Johnston, was born on January 8, 1969 in Baltimore, Maryland at University Hospital. She was called home to our Lord and Savior on September 10, 2020. Valerie received her high school education at Northern High School. Immediately after, she started her profession in Hospitality working at the Marriott Hunt Valley Inn Hotel, which gave her interest to pursue Business Management. She worked in Baltimore, MD for many years and later moved her talents to Wilmington, NC. She went on to study at Cape Fear Community College where she received her Associates degree in Business Management. She spent many great years in Wilmington, NC with her close friends and family. Valerie relocated back to Baltimore, MD where she started a new career housing low income families. She worked as an Assistant Property Manager at Village at Lakeview Apartments in Edgewood, Maryland, where she obtained numerous certifications and awards within her field. Valerie also took interest in becoming a Jewelry Consultant and began selling Paparazzi Accessories. Despite her busy schedule, Val also worked at Chick-fil-A for a short time, just to work alongside her mother. She was a true definition of a work-a-holic and possessed many skills. Valerie was a people person and life of the party. She could bring joy and laughter to any situation, always making people feel comfortable. From an early age she loved to dress in the latest high fashion clothes. Val loved music, dancing, singing, and most of all she loved people, and people truly loved her. Preceding her in death: father, Vernon Womble; stepfather, Harold Johnston; brother, George Griffin Jr.; grandmother, Georgia Bell Irving; nephew, Robert Montgomery. Valerie is survived by: mother, Shirley Johnston; daughter, Ashley Griffin; son, Cameron McMillian; grandchildren, Jayden Griffin and Nylia Griffin; sisters, Wanda Griffin, Yolanda Griffin and Pamela Griffin (Billie Stone sister-in-law); lifelong friend/sister, Naja Hines; aunts, Helen McMillian, Joyce Jones, Jacqueline Simmons (Louis Simmons, uncle), and Debra Green; longtime friend, Willie McDowell; godchildren, Charles and Quanteesha McDowell; companion of her mother, Rodger Blankney; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
