Thomas F. Barnes

THOMAS FRANKLIN BARNES SR., son of Joe Thomas (who preceded him in death) and Florence Barnes, was born on July 31, 1960 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life peacefully and quietly as he lived his life on Thursday October 13, 2022 at his home. Tom, as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, grew up attending the Christ Spiritual Temple where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. While attending church Tom participated in many of the church’s activities. He was proudest of his participation in the church’s play, playing the lead role as the devil in the play “The Shining Pathway Devil’s vs Angel’s” (Just imagine Tom playing a little devil). Tom received his education in the Baltimore City Public School system, and graduated from Edmondson Sr. High School in 1979. Tom had a strong work ethic, which contributed to his 31-year career with the State Department of Public Safety and Correctional Service. He began his career with the department as a correctional officer and worked his way through the ranks retiring in 2017 as the assistant warden. After his retirement he began another career as the assistant director at Volunteers of America until his transition. Tom was a man of few words who said what he meant and meant what he said. He was an avid shopper of clothes, shoes and cars. He was a very sharp dresser, and when it came time to purchase a new car everyone knew Tom was the one to go to for advice. He always looked good while driving his latest purchased vehicle. He also loved to talk about home improvement and electronics to anyone that would listen. Tom leaves to cherish the memory of his life: his loving wife of 30 years, Charlene; two sons, Thomas Franklin Barnes Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland and Terrell Avery Barnes of Edgewood, Maryland; his mother, Florence Barnes of Baltimore, whom he would visit every Saturday for dinner (there’s nothing like mom’s cooking); two sisters, Diana Barnes of Baltimore and Jenny Barnes of White Plains, Maryland; aunt, Charlotte Williams of Baltimore; two sisters-in-law, Angela Starks of Randallstown, Maryland and Valerie (Gregory) Murray of Baltimore; three nieces, Danyell (Eddie) Tolliver of White Plains, Maryland, Chakarla McNeil of Baltimore and Sheena Crosland of Randallstown, Maryland; three nephews, Charles Allen and Karl Allen both of Baltimore and Larry Starks Jr. of Randallstown, Maryland. He also leaves a host of other relatives and friends who mourn his loss.
