Theresa H. Spell

Theresa Hortense Spell was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Lindzy and Lena Nickings on July 8, 1920. She transitioned from this life to eternal life after a brief illness at her home on Thursday, August 30, 2012. She was the youngest of seven children. Theresa’s parents and her siblings, Lorman Nickings, Clarence Nickings, Joseph Nickings, Lloyd Nickings, Maggie Coleman and Dorothy Eaton preceded her in death. She was educated in the Baltimore City Public Schools and at an early age was baptized, gave her life to Christ and received her Christian education at Sharon Baptist Church. Theresa later joined Emanuel Christian Community Church, where she worshiped for most of her adult life. She married William E. Davis on December 29, 1946 and from this union was born her son, William N. Davis. Her husband, William died when their son was two years old. Theresa dedicated her life to raising her son, William, with the help of her two brothers Clarence and Lloyd during his formative years. They resided in the family home at 1133 N. Carey Street where she lived until her death. Theresa later met and married Peter Richard Spell (Richard) in 19980; he preceded her in death in December 2005. Church was a significant part of their marriage and Theresa supported Richard as he pursued his duties as Deacon at Emanuel Christian Community Church. Theresa pursued a brief career at Westinghouse Electric Company and was later employed in the Baltimore City School System as a janitress until her retirement in July 1983. Theresa was a family oriented person who took pride in cooking and preparing home cooked meals for her family. She was well known for her delicious cakes and pies and often presented her well sought after homemade cakes and pies to church members and friends as tokens of her love and affection. She enjoyed sharing her culinary skills with her granddaughter Kelly. They looked forward to spending time together preparing homemade rolls each weekend and baking cookies and pies during holidays which they proudly presented to family and friends. Being an exceptional homemaker and providing a warm home for her husband and her son were top priorities for Theresa and gave her constant joy. When the health of her brothers Lloyd and Clarence began to fail, Theresa dedicated herself to providing them the care and comfort they required. Theresa leaves to cherish her loving memory: her son, William N. Davis; daughter, Helen Belle; adopted daughter, Barbara A. Knox; two granddaughters, Kelly Davis and Cimone Davis; grandson, Ajene’ Davis; nephews and nieces, Leon Eaton, Earl Eaton, Lloyd Eaton, Ronald Eaton, Carol McClain, Thearher Coleman Jr. (Sonny); and a host of other family members, friends and neighbors.
