Sylvia Marie White

Early Wednesday morning, November 23, 2005, SYLVIA MARIE WHITE quietly and peacefully slipped away to the tranquility of eternal rest. Sylvia had been dealing with her illness. But, her poor body was tired. During her last months she would say, "The mind is willing but the body just won't cooperate." The fourth child of the late James Perry and Reba Simpson Dunlap, Sylvia was born on March 1, 1935. She was born in Baltimore City on Franklintown Road. She married her childhood sweetheart Leviticus White. From this union two daughters were born, Leigh Ann and Michelle Faye. At a very early age she had accepted Christ in her life. Sylvia and her siblings attended Evergreen A.M.E. Church during their youth. She was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. Sylvia was a hard worker and enjoyed working. She worked at a chemical plant in South Baltimore until it closed. She continued to work odd jobs. Her last place of employment was Super Kids Warehouse as a price ticketer. She enjoyed working with her girls, Agnes, Margaret and Helen. The ladies at Super Kids started her watching the daytime soap opera, The Young And The Restless. She retired at the age of sixty-five not because she wanted to, but because her health wouldn't allow her to. Sylvia was a very independent person. She preached to her family all the time that it was nothing like having your own. Sylvia would say "God bless the child that had it's own." She believed it and lived by it. Sylvia believed in saving-money, containers, plastic bags, glass jars and other household goods. Sylvia was very thrifty. She could make the eagle on a dollar bill cry. The family would always tease her about being so tight with a dollar, but she didn't care, not one bit. Sylvia was known to her family as Ms. Provident, one of the many hats she wore proudly. Sylvia was family oriented. She loved her family and would help out any way she could. Besides being known as the family bank she was the family's own handy woman. She enjoyed house painting, patching up holes with steel wool, moving furniture, weather proofing windows and caulking. When she visited relatives she would always stop by the bakery to get a bag of goodies, especially the famous crumb cakes. Sylvia enjoyed sewing, ironing, planting flowers, watching informative television programs, reading, listening to music and had a love for cooking. Sylvia was a quiet spirited person, who didn't hesitate to speak whatever was on her mind. Sylvia will be remembered for her thriftiness, her big dollar support, her make this house a happy home mentality, her wonderful sense of humor and her handy woman skills, as well as her mothering to family and extended family members. She leaves to mourn: her devoted husband, Leviticus White; two loving daughters, Leigh Ann White-Turner and Michelle Faye White-Palmer; three sisters, Virginia L. Ball, Mary T. Davis, and Shirley Dunlap; two sons-in-law, Otis D. Turner and Ulysses L. Palmer; three grandsons, Marvin L. Harris, Marcus L.R. Palmer and Ulysses Palmer; four great-grandchildren, Tierra, Unique, Erick and Ulysses Cortez; two sisters-in-law, Harriett Dunlap and Emma (Mickey); and a host of nieces and nephews, as well as extended family and friends.
