Shirley Joan Lewis

SHIRLEY JOANN DOGGETT was born to Mr. Sinclair and Mrs. Gladys Marie Doggett on September 21, 1940 in Chesnee, South Carolina. She grew up in The South and lived there until her late teens; then she moved to Washington, D.C., eventually moving to Maryland making it her permanent residence. Even though she left The South, she had so many fond memories of living there with her parents, brothers and sisters.Shirley was a loving, generous, prayerful woman who adored her family and wanted everyone to be on one accord, expressing love and compassion even in tumultuous situations, Before her illness her burning desire was to instill the word of God in everyone she came in contact with Her wish was for her family to be saved knowing Christ as their personal Savior. It was amazing how how she never completed high school but knew flawlessly and effortlessly scriptures from Genesis Chapter 1 to Revelation Chapter 22. She preferred to be called, “Sis. Lewis” and always ended plans and preparations with “by the Grace of God.” She lived a basic life, putting Christ first. She desire a good sermon to get her holy shout on. That's our fondest memory of her along with dressing in a beautiful suit coordinated with her husband. Dave, her hair neatly pressed and curled, ready to go to hear the word. Her simple desired were a piece of cake from Herman's Bakery, which she could distinctly tell if it was not, shrimp salad, sharp cheddar cheese, sliced and eaten alone, and sometimes a good piece of fried chicken.She adored the fragrance of a good perfume, never gave up the search for the perfect pair of comfortable socks and never failed to provide a good teaching from the word to feed the soul of a fellow worshiper of person in need. If Sis. Lewis had final words for you all today, she'd surely tell you what the Holy Spirit spoke to her in 1977 when she accepted Christ. Those words were, “Get in church, set an example for your children and I'll come again when I come to beseech you.”Sis. Lewis is survived by: her brothers and sisters, James, Raymond, Preston, Sinclair, Bobby, Larry, Catherine and Byrdell; and their children, Reginald, Deborah, James, Cynthia, Anthony and Vanessa; sixteen grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and friends.
