Shirley D. Whitfield

Shirley Diane Whitfield, the beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Ossie Whitfield, was born on May 4, 1951 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. She quietly departed this life on Sunday, February 23, 2003.Shirley, lovingly known by her family as Donna, received her early education in the public schools of Pottstown, Pennsylvania. She attended Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and later matriculated to Morgan State University, where she received a Baccalaureate Degree. In 1983, she attended the University of Maryland, School of Law, where she received her Juris Doctorate Degree.Shirley was a faithful and dedicated employee of the State Department of Aging for more than twenty years. She was a leader in her field and a great advocate in providing services to the elderly and the disadvantaged prior to her employment with the State Department on Aging. Shirley was employed by the Department of Social Services where she continuously helped those in need. Shirley was a loving and devoted mother of one daughter, Stacy. Shirley and Stacy were very close, traveling many places together, exploring and enjoying life together. Stacy was the love of Shirley’s life. Shirley comes from a loving family of one sister and four brothers; namely, Jean, Dennis, Richard, Joseph and the late Charles Whitfield.Shirley accepted Christ at an early age. She was an avid reader of her Bible and truly believed in the works of the Almighty God. Shirley’s spiritual beliefs were exhibited in her everyday life. She would keep herself excited about God and His goodness by attending nearby community churches as often as possible and singing and listening to His praises in song.Shirley loved life and she lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed traveling and being with her family. She had and infectious laugh and when you heard her laugh, you would laugh also. She held strong opinions on everyday issues and was often sought for advice. Her face was very expressive, and she had a way of communicating all types of funny stories to her family and friends. Above all else, Shirley was also serious about life and she had a desire to make this world a better place for her daughter, Stacy. Shirley left a wonderful legacy and many lasting memories for Stacy and everyone who knew her.She leaves to cherish her memory: a loving daughter, Stacy; one sister, Jean; three brothers, Dennis of Reading, PA, Richard of Pottstown, PA and Joseph of Rochester, NY; two sisters-in-law, Robin of Reading, PA and Mary Ann of Pottstown, PA; a devoted friend, Karen Murphy; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
