Shirley Armstrong Hardy

Shirley Armstrong Hardy entered into eternal life on September 1, 2008. Shirley was born to the late Ralph L. Armstrong and Marian A. White in Richmond, Virginia. She attended Richmond Public schools throughout her school years,and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age.Shirley began working at Federal Reserve Bank at the age of nineteen in 1967. She retired from the Federal Reserve in October 2004. After retirement she enjoyed traveling,sewing and spending time with family and friends.Shirley has been a devoted member of Fifth Baptist Church and had a great love and dedication for her church. Shirley joined The Charmettes,Incorporated Richmond Metropolitan Chapter in September 1998. She loved the Organization and its mission to raise cancer awareness and funds to further education,prevention,treatment and research.Shirley was a faithful member. she supported all functions and activities,giving freely of herself and her resources. She served as the Benevolence Chairperson and attended National conventions when her health allowed her to do so. When her health would not allow her to attend meetings,somehow,she continued to attend and support the Chapter's activities.Shirley was best known for being a behind the scenes type person. She did not require the spot light,but she was always in the background making things happen. She was a very giving,loving and caring person who was always willing to give beyond the call of duty. For those of us who knew her it was clear that she was never flamboyant,but she always left you with a lasting impression of who she was and what she stood for. She had a quiet spirit but was a woman of powerful inner strength. She leaves to cherish her memories,daughter,Andrea D.Coleman(John);son,Brian K.Smith(Vonda);eight grandchildren; Jordan,J.Christopher,Jade,Trinity,Jansen,Janai,Bria and Rianne;sister,Angela L. Whitley;devoted friend,Delores Smith;stepmother,Mary L. Armstrong and a host of family and friends.Shirley has left a powerful legacy. Many of us will forever cherish her example and demonstration of strength,perserverance and the power to overcome obstacles. She recognized that her strength came from Jesus Christ and would daily identify even the smallest achievements as blessings. She would often say"now that's a blessing!" She will be missed,but her powerful spirit shall live on!
