Samuel Dutton

On Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 6:52 am. Samuel Leo Dutton was called home to be with the Lord. Leo, the tenth child of John and Ollie Dutton was born on February 10, 1930 in Baltimore, Maryland. The family consisted of thirteen brothers and sisters. He was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. His childhood years were spent on Boone Street in East Baltimore. He accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church. He joined the quarter, The Gospel Comforters, and sang God's praises in churches throughout Maryland. Leo met and married the love of his life, Alva Elois Taylor. They were married on December 3, 1949 and were blessed with seven children. Leo started working at an early age. He was employed with Oglesby Transfers for twenty-five years. Upon the retirement of Mr. Oglesby the business was turned over to Leo and in 1976 Dutton Moving and Storage Company was established. Leo was a pillar in the Baltimore Community. He was always willing to assist and serve in any capacity to get the job done. His clientele consisted of Johns Hopkins Hospital/University and their affiliates, University of Maryland Shock Trauma, Good Samaritan Hospital, Sheppard Pratt Hospital and Broadmead retirement community. He serviced commercial as well as residential moving. He was deeply committed to his company logo “We take the worry out of moving”. Leo was always active with his family and church community. He was a faithful servant of St. Matthews serving as President of the Methodist men, Trustee Board and a member of the male chorus. Her was also a member of the Magnificent Men. He was a lover of sports. As a teenager, he was a member of the Y Eagles Negro League baseball team. He formed The Bench Warmers Social Club which gathered together on Sunday to enjoy the game. He was a loyal fan of the Baltimore Colts, Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens. He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, as well as a caring and dependable friend to all that crossed his path. He leaves to cherish precious memories: his loving wife of sixty wonderful years, Alva Dutton; sisters, Carrie Bowers; two sons, Leo and Donald; five daughters, Theresa, Darlene, Cynthia, Crystal and Jacqueline; daughters-in-law, Vendetta Dutton; three sons-in-law, Mark Anderson, Philip Shearrill and Von Wiggins; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews,and friends.
