Ruth Weaver Smith

On Thanksgiving Day, 2004, Ruth’s favorite day of the year, she was called to her Heavenly Father from Sinai Hospital.Ruth Malinda Weaver, daughter of the late Mabel Hooper Weaver and the late Sherman Ulysses Weaver, was born in Baltimore on June 22, 1927.She graduated from Douglass High School in the class of 1944, proud of her class and friends made there, with the ever expression “after 44, there are no more Douglass High’s Best”!!She went on to attend Coppin State Teachers College, (now Coppin State University), graduating in 1948 with further study in Library Science at Loyola College and the University of Maryland (College Park). She was dedicated to both the teaching profession and as Librarian (the first) at School #142. Ruth enjoyed very much the role of teaching (30 years), some of her students returning to her classroom and her home during and after their college years, in remembering her loyalty, intelligence and as a guiding force through the “wonderful learning days in Mrs. Smith’s class”.To know Ruth was to love her – a giving, caring, smiling spirit. She was a gentle soft spoken one who radiated warmth with sincerity, extremely devoted to her family and friends and in spite of her quiet manner, was assertive in expressing the positive –a wide sense of humor versus intellect, and avid reader and always on top of current events.Her love of music and dance was delightful and entertaining with husband “Smitty” of 50 years and especially at Christmastime with dinners joyously prepared by both for family and friends in their lovely Braddish Ave home.A faithful and loyal, long time member (over 60 years) of Grace Presbyterian Church, her greatest pleasure was the development of the church library initiated there years ago in the Multi-Purpose Room.Another pleasure was contributing generously to her church while at the same time expressing sorrow at her inability in attending due to illness and confinement at home.Left to cherish Ruth’s memory: dear sisters, Gwendolyn Mickle, Gloria Farrar, Nancy Finch, Frances Dorsey, Joyce Weaver and Tamara Johnson; brother-in-law, Warren Finch; dear stepsisters, Charlotte Harper, Juanita Gates, Marian Barclift; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
