Ruth Elizabeth Hatcher

Our beloved, Ruth Elizabeth Hatcher was born in Disputanta, Virginia on August 15, 1920 to the late Fannie and Chastine Hunt. She was called home on October 6, 2013 with her loving daughters by her bedside. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband Wilford, four brothers and six sisters. At an early age, she received Christ as her Lord and Savior at Lebanon Baptist Church in Disputanta, Virginia. She was educated in the Disputanta Training School. Ruth met Wilford Hatcher at Windsor Farms in Richmond. She married the love of her life on February 19, 1943 and remained so for the next 68 years until his death on March 2, 2012. Soon after they were married, they moved to New York where they lived most of their lives. She was a great caretaker and enjoyed wearing her all white starched nurses clothing when she worked. When her husband Wilford started his gas station business, she stopped being a nurse and became the bookkeeper for their business and continued to be a homemaker for the family. After a number of years in retirement, Ruth and the family decided to pull up stakes and return to Richmond. She cared deeply for her family, friends and all her loved ones. Ruth was the backbone, the strength, and the light of her family. She was a true reflection of God’s love! Ruth really loved sewing and enjoyed making covers for clothes hangers, doll clothes and aprons. She also took the time to relax by putting piece puzzles together, making Japanese Bunka Embroidery and playing bridge with her friends. Ruth had a quiet spirit and caring heart. She had a passion for her roses, especially the ones that lined the side of her home. Ruth was a methodical person doing tasks on particular days: the laundry on Tuesday; ironed the clothes on Wednesday and cleaned the house on Saturday. Not only was she a great wife, mother and friend, but a provider as well. She will truly be missed. Ruth’s memories will be cherished by her two caring daughters, Ruth Ann Johnson(Gregory)and Vanessa Hatcher;granddaughter,Tracey Cabanis;two great-grandsons, William and Christopher; a host of nieces,nephews,cousins,First Union Baptist Church family and many other caring relatives and friends.
