Rodney D. Austin Sr

Rodney Darryl Austin Sr. was born on January 10, 1960, at University Hospital in Baltimore City, Maryland, to the late Eugene Austin Jr. and Jeanette Austin. A lifelong Baltimorean, his life was rooted in family, hard work, and strength that left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Rodney received his early education in Baltimore City Public Schools, and attended Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County. He went on to obtain his GED and complete a Plumbing Assistant Apprenticeship. Throughout his working life, Rodney earned multiple certifications, including Plumbing Certification, Sprinkler Maintenance Certification, Forklift Operator Certification, and a CDL for long-haul driving. He had a long career as a CDL long-haul truck driver and also worked as a certified forklift operator for The Sun newspaper. No matter the role, Rodney took pride in his work and carried himself with professionalism. He met the love of his life, Margaret, and they were married in 1982. From their union, they had two daughters, Danelle and Crystal. During a speech at her 60th birthday celebration, he shared, "I am honored to be her husband, and even through our stuff, we were in love, and we are still in love." A man of strong faith, he was baptized in 1996 alongside Danelle by Rev. Dr. Zollie D. Bagby Sr., then Pastor of The Village Baptist Church in Edmondson Village. He enjoyed good food, pork being his favorite, R&B and Hip-Hop music, and playing the guitar. In his youth he was known as an all around athlete and would try any sport, throughout his life he enjoyed reading, playing chess, and driving. He often said that being on the road felt like watching a movie, a reflection of how he found peace and reflection behind the wheel. Rodney also enjoyed his Knotty Head Seagram's Gin, vodka and cigarettes. Rodney was a quiet soul, who enjoyed a good party. He loved to dress well and showed up fully for the people he loved. If there was a wedding, Rodney was there. If someone was sick or hospitalized, he would show up, regardless of the hospital rules or visitation hours. His presence was steady and comforting. Family meant everything to Rodney, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on through his family, his work ethic, and the countless lives he touched simply by showing up. Rodney was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Austin Jr., Brother Eugene "Chucky" Austin Ill, and a host of other beloved family and friends. Rodney leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of over 44 years, Margaret Austin; his children: Danelle Pinder (Jerome Pinder), Crystal Bullock (Christopher Bullock Sr.), and Rodney Darryl Austin Jr. (Gelaine Austin). As well as his mother, Jeanette Austin, siblings Micheal Austin (Wanda Austin), and Cheryl Fulton; Sister in Law Eunice Harris (Kevin Harris Sr.) He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, in order by age: Yamaudi Pinder, Jada Pinder, Justice Pinder, Zakiyah Bullock, Jenelle Miller, Christopher Bullock Jr., Cai Bullock, Amira Austin, Imani Austin, Ahmund Austin, and Iyanna Austin; and his great-grandchildren, Tyren Johnson and Tymier Johnson; and a host of nephews and nieces cousins family and friends.
