Robert Harrison

On March 23, 2003, Robert Harrison, Sr. was called home to be with the Lord and leave this earthly world. Robert or “Big Bob,” as his friends called him, entered this world on November 15, 1924. Robert was the first son of three sons born in the union of Onia and John Henry Harrison. Robert was born in Harris, North Carolina.Robert was educated in Charlotte, North Carolina and obtained his high school diploma.Robert was educated in Charlotte, North Carolina and obtained his high school diploma.Robert met Hattie in 1941 and they became childhood sweethearts. Robert married Hattie on July 31, 1943. Throughout their union they shared fifty-nine (59) years of love for one another. From this union of love two (2) sons were born, Robert l. Skip Harrison, Jr. and Phillip Albert Harrison.In 1941, during a visit by Daddy Grace to Charlotte, North Carolina, Robert and many other young people joined the United House of Prayer for All People. Although he didn’t attend services often, he talked about the church with many family members and friends. On Saturday afternoon (March 22,2003) he was observed by his son reading Apostle C. M. Gibb’s 26th Anniversary souvenir program.Robert joined the U. S. Navy and served in World War II. Robert joined Hattie in Baltimore, Maryland in 1943 and he started his Civil Service career at the Army Chemical Center (Edgewood Arsenal). Robert retired as a Master Mechanic in 1980.Robert enjoyed sports and took up the interest of golf at an early age. During his years in Baltimore, Bob became an avid golfer. He was considered by many to be a professional amateur golfer and oat one period during his golfing years he carried a 6 handicap. Bob played with many of the older black professionals including Lee Elder. Bob played golf every chance he could until January of this year. Bob was sociable and easily approachable. His other great love was working on old cars and trucks. He spent many countless hours restoring hie 1949 Ford Truck. Bob also loved talking about sports, politics and geography. Bob was a meticulous fashionable dresser and never left home without a cap or hat.Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and made sure his family was taken care of. Family and their happiness were always #1 in his life. Robert encouraged his children and wife to strive to be the best and never give up. He was truly and inspiration and a motivator to all who came to know him.He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife, Hattie; loving children, Skip, Philip, and Kenitra; grandchildren, Tonya, Carol, and Philip; great-grandchildren, Dana, Alex, Morgan, Brandon and Kaia; a brother, Sam Harrison; an aunt, Edna Spears who both are living in Charlotte, North Carolina; a devoted niece, Devork Tucker of Baltimore, Maryland; and a host of family and friends.
