Robert Cheeks

Robert Joe Cheeks, youngest son of the late Vera L. Brockman and Joseph A. Cheeks was born on September 1, 1946, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He departed this life surrounded by friends and family on August 5,2022, after a lengthy illness. Robert Joe was affectionately Known as Mr. Robert Cheeks. During the Migration, Robert’s parents moved their family to Baltimore, Maryland Robert was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and went to work in construction shortly after high school. Robert was a hard working who mastered every job he tackled with skill and finesse. The job that brought Robert his joy was working for the Baltimore City Health Department as a phlebotomist. He also worked in customer service for the health department in 2018. Robert was known as dapper dresses and one of his most cherished wardrobe staples were his hats. Robert had hats to go with every outfit for occasion. As an avid home team fan, he had every type of Baltimore Ravens and Orioles caps you could imagine. Robert was a connoisseur of music, especially music from the sixties and seventies. His favorite groups were the Whispers and O’Jay’s. Robert also had a wonderful Singing voice and would often bring his music downstairs to share with his fellow tenants at the Terrace Garden Apartments for entertainment. He was also a huge movie buff and enjoyed either going movie theaters or watching movies at home. It was one of his favorite pastimes. Robert was a proud member of a distinguished and supportive fellowship for more than 29 years. During that time, he provided reciprocal support and friendship to many people who crossed through the rooms of his fellowship. Being in this organization provided Robert with a framework, guidelines, and structure that he embodied through his lifelong dedication to his recovery. One of Robert’s greatest joys was becoming a father to his first -born daughter (his twin) Aprile, who he called “Molly Bee” and his son. Robert Anthony, who he called; “Face” and “Scooter.” Robert married The love of his life, Juanita, and were together for 31 years until she passed away in 2009. Out of this union, they became proud parents to their son Robert Anthony. As a result of this union, Robert also gained another daughter Nathalia who called “Wink.” He was a devoted and loving great- grandfather who was affectionately called “Poppie.” Robert genuinely loved his family and spending quality time with them was his priority. Robert has touched the lives of many, and he will never be forgotten by those he met, knew, and loved him. Robert was proceeded in death by his loving wife Juanita Cheeks; Brothers Willie R, Cheeks, Sr, Lewis Hood, Michael Cheeks-Hood, Anthony Cheeks, Troy Toliver, bonus mother Ms. Lucille, and son-in-law, Kevin Mosby. Robert leaves to cherish his memory: Son Robert Anthony Cheeks and daughter-in-law Keisha “Kei” Cheeks; Daughters: Aprile E. Purvis and Nathalia H. Drew; two Grandsons: Montaz Cheeks and Rasheed Cheeks; two Granddaughters Brianna Gibson (Jimmy) and Destiny Addison; and one Great-grandson, Brandon Gibson. Robert also leaves to cherish his memory: five sisters, Joan Cheeks-Reddick (Reginald), Brenda Artis, Carolyn Rodgers, Annette Rodgers, and Juanita-Toliver-Rodney (Anthony); three Brothers, Terry Cheeks, Donald Hood, and Jerry Toliver; Special Friends Veda Moore and Helen Ross; one special cousin Virginia Crawford; and a host of relatives and friends.
