Robert E. Buchanan

Robert Edward Buchanan, Jr., the beloved son of the late Robert and Eliza Buchanan, was born on April 17, 1921 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Robert was one of four Children. On the morning of February 20, 2012, the Lord summoned Robert to his eternal place of peace and rest. Robert received his education in the South Carolina Public School System. Continuing his quest for knowledge, after high school he attend North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University's College of Engineering receiving a Bachelor of Science. After receiving his degree, Robert was drafted in the U. S. Military where he fought in World War II as part of the allied forces attempting to end Hitler's malicious rear in Europe. While in the military, Robert was struck with misfortune when his new bride and child died during labor. After completing his tour of duty, Robert received an honorable discharge from the United States Army and decided to start a new, by moving north to Baltimore, Maryland, where he met and married Phoebe Edna Buchanan on August 9, 1949. From this union they were blessed with a son, Gerald Buchanan. Upon his arrival, Robert also took a position at the second largest steel company in the United States, known for producing warships, Bethlehem Steel, known by Baltimore ans as “Sparrows Point”, where he was a committed employee for over 40 years until his retirement. Robert who was affectionately known as “Uncle Rob” by his extended family was well known through out the community because he had a knack for making friends everywhere he went. He will be forever for his mild mannered demeanor, being dependable, supportive and having a very strong will. Robert will also be remembered and admired for his quest for knowledge he was extremely well read and known for reading books such as the encyclopedia, bible and almanac from cover to cover. He never traveled without having his reading material with him in a bag giving him the nickname of “Shopping Bag Rob”. Robert leaves to cherish his memory; his wife Phoebe Buchanan; two sons, Gerald Buchanan and Leonard Habersham; daughter-in-law Karolyn; three grandchildren, Leonora, Shae and Kyle; one close cousin Harriett Demony; a very special family, the Partlows; and three special he was abundantly blessed with Thelma, Barbara and Lisa of the Partlow family and a host of other family and friends.
