Richard Joseph Woodson

On Wednesday, February 20, 2019, Richard Joseph Woodson, loving husband and father of six children, passed away at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Woodson and one son Richard Woodson. Richard was born on March 15, 1925 in Amelia County, Virginia to Richard and Annie (Carter) Woodson. He received his education in the Amelia County Public Schools. In the late 1940's, after settling in Richmond, Richard met and married Juanita Woodson in April, 1953. To this union two daughters and four sons were born. Richard had a passion for fishing, hunting and making homemade wines. He combined his three favorite hobbies to create extra ordinary cuisines for his family and friends. His homemade wines and cakes made from his sister's recipe were some of the best to be tasted in Virginia. Richard was also a lover of nature, spending quiet time at the lake or working in the yard. He enjoyed talking and sharing stories of his life. His prized possessions were his grandchildren, whom he affectionately gave their own special names, Sugar pudding, Lil Rat, Munchkin, Ontay and Anca, just to name a few. He was known for his quick wit his infectious smile and his kind and compassionate spirit after his retirement from The Standard Paper Mill, he was employed by the Bullock family arid later the Bullock/Branch/Barton family whom he was devoted to until his recent illness. He leaves to cherish his fondest memories, two daughters, Rowena Williams and Sylvia Woodson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sons, Robert (Maude) Winston, Freddie (Angela) Woodson, Warren (Juanita) Woodson of Georgia; a sister, Gladys (John) Jones of Elmsford, N.Y.; brother-in-law, Harry Brown of Bronx, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Vernell Woodson; nephews ,Samuel, Keith and Nathan Woodson, Craig (Koritha) Jones of Columbus, Ohio,Collin (Crystal) Jones of California, Larry; Charles and Jarvit Wingo; nieces, Felicia Coleman- Woodson, Linda Robertson of Tarrytown, N.Y, Joann Turner of N.Y. and Joyce Wingo, (deceased); grandchildren, Saronna and Bianca Woodson, Imani Woodson of Georgia, Martin and Shania Spencer of Brooklyn, N.Y, Latara and Breontay Lewis, .Yolonda(Herman) Chandler of Georgia, Robinette Winston, Tahlitha (Torrance) Roane,Queaque Kelsoe; a host of great and great-great-grandchildren, several close cousins, other relatives and friends.
