Obituary Richard James Mason Jr., affectionately known as Bobby, was born on October 7, 1955. He peacefully departed this world on September 10, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard James Mason and sister, Doretha Crawley. Bobby leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Kathy Mason; two sons, Antonio “Snap” Williams (Tiffany) and Richard James Mason, III; four grandchildren, Tae-Shana S. Williams, Alicia D. Williams, Antonio Williams Jr., and Geovanni T. E. Mason; mother, Lorraine Patterson, brothers, Lloyd Mason (Marie) and Wayne Mason; two sisters, Marguerite Hakim (Fardan) and Sylvia Paige; mother-in-law, Odie Louise Purter; seven sisters-in-law, one devoted, Virgil Purter; two brothers-in-law; one aunt, Mary “Tresa” McQueen; one devoted uncle, James “Jimmy” Squire (Chaunda); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, among them devoted nieces, LaTisha Mason, Angel Mason and Lisa Purter and devoted friend, Leslie Hamlett. Bobby was educated in Boston, Massachusetts until he moved to Virginia in 1987. He graduated from George Wythe High School, and then enlisted in the Air Force where he served for four years. Bobby kept up his life of service after leaving the military, and proudly began his profession with the Boys & Girls Club. After that, he began working for the US Postal Service as a mail handler for 38 years before retiring. He was also the shop steward for the past several years, serving his union with the same respect, integrity, and dedication that characterized his military career. Over 40 years ago in Massachusetts, Bob met the love of his life; and he two became one in 2004. Playing ping pong and checkers, entertaining, and spending time with family and friends were some of Bobby’s all-time favorite interests. He also never shied away from a good old political debate with his brother, Lloyd and he looked forward to talking smack with his uncle Jimmy defending his all-time favorite teams (Los Angeles Lakers and New England Patriots), however, when it came to their shared passion for boxing, they essentially agreed. Bobby had a zest for life and a heart filled with love. Above all else, Bobby was a beloved son, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. His unwavering love and commitment to his family, along with his generosity and encouraging demeanor, made a lasting impression on everyone who had the good fortune to get to know him. He was always there for you when you needed him, and he was known for being both direct and encouraging. Bobby was a family man through and through. He will be remembered for his belly laughs, infectious smile, quick wit, and love for grilling, but mostly for the unconditional love he showed to all. Bobby was a strong-willed, yet calm soul. Even when his health began to fail, he fought to the end and never complained. His family will forever cherish his memory. His life was a testament to strength, kindness, and unwavering love
