Rachel C Winkler

On Friday, May20, 2016 our beloved mother and grandmother left this world to be with our Lord.RACHEL C. WINKLER was born on March 16,1928 to the pround parents of John and Tennie Veale. Rachel was raised in Bertie County, North Caroline and accepted Christ as her savior as a young girl while attending Mt. Olive Baptist Church. After leaving her hometown as a young adult, Rachel moved to Baltimore,Maryland and found employment at John Hopkins Hospital. She worked for “Hopkins” as she called it for twenty-eight years as a Dietitian. She soon married her first husband, John T. Cobb and from this loving union they had a daughter, Brenda Yvonne Cobb. When John passed away, Rachel found love a second time and married Howard L. Winkler and remained his loving wife until he passed away. She loved the Lord with all her heart and was happy to share His love with all whom she would meet. She always had a word of encouragement and was happy to share her faith and lift you up if you were down. She loved reminding us too “Stay with God and He will stay with you” As a long-time member of Providence Inspirational Baptist Church, she served on the stewardess board until she was to sick to serve. Rachel had the gift of hospitality and she loved to cook and share her home with family and friends. Home was always open and something good was always on the stove or in the oven, like her fried chicken or her sweet potato pies. Her love of cooking was reflected when she helped to create menu at her church as well as being a founding member and co-worker of the Three Dolls Club House. During late spring and early summer nights you could find her on her front porch cheering on her Baltimore Orioles and listening to the radio. We will miss her cooking and her kindness but mostly we will miss the way she would sing a word “hello” when she answered the telephone Her legacy will live on in: her devoted daughter , Brenda Y.Coob; two granddaughter, Shikila R.Gundy (James) and LaToya C. Knight ;Grandson, Alvone M. Jones; four great-granddaughters and great-grandson;three sisters, Pauline Peale, Hattie Lee, Mattie Veale and three brothers, William Veale,Clarence Veale, and Randolph Veale; nieces,nephews,cousins and a host of other family and friends.
