Rachel Miles

We have gathered here today to honor the life of. Rachel Rena Miles. She was born on September 14, 1937 to the late Rose Allen Miles and Willie Jass Miles in Burlington, North Carolina. Rachel's mother, Rose Miles, died whine she was very young and at the age of two, her father, Willie Miles married the late Clara Irene (Moss) Miles and relocated the family to Baltimore, Maryland. He left seeking a better life in the north for his family. God blessed him to receive to job at Esskay Meat Packing Plant where he worked in the ham department for 33 years. Rachel received her education at the historical Booker T. Washington Junior High School and the original Douglass High School her in Baltimore City, Later, she received he high school diploma and received training in business and nursing. She worked as a clerical assistant and nurses aid and until her illness as a private duty nurse. Rachel had various loves. Reading, listening to music and watching movies is what she liked best. She was an avid and constant reader of various kinds of books especially the Bible and religious books of the Lord. Earlier in life she liked to sing and listen to music. This love of music was passed down to her by her father Willie Miles. You would always hear..... the Staple Singers, (she liked to sang along with Mavis Staple whom she adored) Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, the Four Tops and her all time favorite Aretha Franklin. The love of music was imparted into her children and they took on her love. Family was her important and special love. The love for her children, grandchildren, and son-in-law was very deep. Having family gatherings at Christmas, going out to eat, going to the movies, and traveling is what she really enjoyed. At the age of 64, she took her first and only plane ride to Boston and visited Martha's Vineyard with her family and treasured it for a long time. Having God in her life was her greatest love. She was raised in a home to love God and at an early age accepted Jesus as her personal Savior. She loved going to church and prayed constantly. Many of her conversations were about the Lord. She had a lot of faith in Him. Knowing about God and His love was important and she bestowed this upon her children. Rachel was very “lady like” and adored nice things and sweet smelly things. It was displayed in her appearance, hair, clothes and in personal likes and loves. She also had a great sense of humor and laughed a lot. She found humor in many things. Throughout her many illnesses and numerous hospital stays, she had a constant companion, one who stayed by her side, loved her unconditionally, was a true giver and lavished her with gifts, her son, Derek. Rachel leaves to celebrate her life, rejoice in her memories and anticipates a glorious reunion...her children...Anna Evette, Cheryl Ann, (Bob, deceased), Theresa Servada, Mark Anthony, Derek Dion Ellis, son-in-law, Keisha, granddaughter, Gerard, grandson, Oosei (grandson, deceased), Thaxter, grandson, friends... Evelyn, Kathy and Betty, neighbors of 5002 Crenshaw Avenue, and a host of relatives.
