Portia Johnson

Portia E. Johnson, daughter of the late Lee Wessie Johnson, was born on November 20, 1949 in Dillon South Carolina. She departed this life on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 after a valiant fight with various illnesses. Portia received her education through the Dillon County Public School System and was a graduate of her beloved Dillon High School in Dillon, South Carolina. After graduation, she moved "north" with family to Washington, DC and eventually settled in Baltimore, Maryland. She spent many of her working years, employed with Associated Sulpicians as a cook and retired from that establishment in 2008. Lib as she was affectionately called by family, later became the mother of one daughter, Dana and a set of twin boys, Devin and Kevin. These three lives were so passion and purpose. She worked tirelessly providing and nurturing Dana, Devin & Kevin to ensure they had everything they needed to be productive adults in society. Lib was a dedicated employee and ensured that her children understood the value in hard work and a strong work ethic-she taught them that you have to get out there and earn it...Nothing was given freely or without effort. She was a true example of that to her children and family. Lib was everybody's "Mamma". She did not turn anyone away. If you walked through her doors with one of her children, you became one of her children. Her heart was that big that she could genuinely love and care for many that were not hers and she did that continually until the day God called her home to rest. You knew you were a part of Lib's family when you got a plate of her home cooked food made with love. Her chicken could rival Popeyes and WIN! The thing that gave her the most joy was to gather family and friends in her home and feed them the love that we all call food. This brought happiness and peace to her heart. She was truly our Big Mamma. Portia leaves to mourn: her daughter, Dana Johnson; her son, Devin Johnson; her brothers, Bobby Joe Johnson and Ronnie Huggins; sister, Sophia Johnson; niece and nephew who were more like her children, Juanita and Juan Sutton; grand-children, Nicholas Booker, Noah Scott and Devin Johnson and daughter in-law, Kimberly Johnson. She was proceeded in death by her mother, Lee Wessie Johnson; her brothers, Ellis Johnson, Herman Grice, Wesley Johnson and Ronnie Huggins; son, Kevin Johnson and daughter in-law, Patience Young-Johnson. She leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and children that called her Mamma.
