Phyllis Maxine Cotman

Phyllis Maxine Cotman, 76, transition to her heavenly home on the morning of January 23, 2016. Her devotion to her family and her faith in God supported her doing her struggle with illness and ultimately gave her peace. She was surrounded by family, friends, and caregivers doing the last days of her life. She was born to the late Doris Davis in Richmond, Virginia on November 27, 1939. Phyllis was educated in the Richmond Public Schools. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. There, she served as a youth usher and a member of the Youth Missionary Society. She attended St. Paul’s Baptist Church in her later years of life. Doing her career, Phyllis was employed at MCV Hospital, where she first served as a nursing assistant and then a clerk in the emergency room. She dedicated her service for over 25 years, retiring in 1995. After retiring, she gained part-time employment as a housekeeper at Covenant Woods Healthcare Center, where she enjoyed fellow shipping with the residents. Family friends were Phyllis’s passion and joy. She was a loving mother to her daughters and matriarch to her family. She loved to cook and entertain, and frequently held family gatherings at her home. Countless hours of her time was spent being entertained by Wheel of Fortune, Jerry Springer, Young and the Restless, Ellen, Steve Harvey, and shows on the Investigation Discovery channel. Phyllis also loved the beach. She will be remembered for her nurturing spirit, caring personality, and her natural since of humor. She was preceded in death by her mother, Doris Davis and her youngest daughter, Deborah Cotman. She is survived by her daughters Wanda Simmons( James) and Sandra Crenshaw; grandchildren: devoted Corey Cotman(Shasoki) Devon Simmons, Kimberly Simmons- Jordan( Jermaine), Shemia Porcher( Byron), and devoted Brittani Crenshaw; great-grandchildren :Kyuntae Simmons, Shacor and Dior Cotman, Brytton and Brooklyn Porcher, Devyn Simmons and Jordyn Holt; aunt: Dixie Brown (Shedrack); devoted cousins: Wyoma Staten, Earl West, and Hassan Hameen; devoted friends: Melvin Jones, Lillian Cotman, Annie-Christian, Lou Ellen Jones, Geraldine Easley, and Wilma Andrews; pet: Dahli.
