Phillip Smith

PHILLIP CLIFTON SMITH, son of the late George and Frances Smith was born on November 12, 1934 in Norlina, North Carolina. He was the eighth of twelve children. He departed this life on Monday, April 7, 2014. Phillip accepted Christ at an early age at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He graduated from Warren County Training School known now as North Warren High School iin North Carolina. After graduating from school, Phillip began working at DuPont in Richmond, VA. During the twelve years that he worked at DuPont, he fell in love with his hometown sweetheart Catherine Phillips. In 1958, the two became one and from that union four children were born. As a family, they lived in Richmond and thereafter moved to Baltimore in 1967. Shortly after moving to Baltimore, Phillip became a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Harold Carter where he was on the Usher Board. He later became a member of Gillis Memorial Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Theodore C. Jackson, Jr. where he was also a very active member. He was on the Security Ministry and Vice President of the Busy Bees. He also loved opening up for the Children Church, cooking for church events, etc. He atteded Gillis faithfully for many years until his health failed. Phillip was hard working man who always provided for this family. In fact, he would work multiple jobs just to see that his family had everything that they needed. He loved making money but he also loved giving back. Though he worked several jobs throughout his life, he retired from the state, ranking as a Sergeant for the Coppin State College Police. Phillip was a man of God, a loving husband, devoted father and an amazing grandfather. He loved fishing, watching Westerns and baseball (oh, how he loved his Orioles). He also loved hosting cookouts and/or any other events to get the family together. In addition, he loved cooking and listening to gospel music. In fact, he was apart of a gospel group called, “The Evening Stars”. He loved traveling and singing with the group. Phillip leaves to mourn his loving memory: four children, Clifton, Benita, Kevin and Andre; twelve grandchildren, Angela, Eric, Clifton Jr., Tiara, Chantelle, DeVaughn, Candace, Ebonye, Marques, Cree, Kamirah and Tyran; three great-grandchildren, Breniya, Isaiah and Xavier; three brothers, James Ed, Sterling and Henry; two sisters, Mary and Kate; four sisters-in-law, Arlene, Carrie, Minnie and Henrietta; two brothers-in-law, Elbert and Calvin Phillips; one devoted son-in-law, Gregory Billy; two loving daughters-in-law, D'Shanna Jean Jackson-Smith and Barbara Smith; three close friends, Loise Moore, Richard McClain and Alvin Scott and a host of family and friends. Phillip was preceded in death by his loving wife, Catherine Smith; six siblings, John, Lue, Walter, Robert, George and Ella; and one grandson-in-law, Dominic Winder.
