Pauline Hopewell-Saunders

Pauline Hopewell Saunders died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Northwest Hospice Hospital in Baltimore County, Maryland. Pauline was the third daughter born to Paul and Cecelia Hopewell in Baltimore, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings: Saul, James, Paul, Agnes, Francis, Jerome and Joseph. In June she buried her son Harold “Blue” Hopewell. The death of her son took the wind from under her wings. Pauline was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. All of her adult life she worked on Public Health taking care of the sick and especially the elderly. She loved taking care of the elderly. Even after her retirement she continued to care for her “Little Old Lady” and her “Little Old Man”. She loved taking care of her patients. As faith would have it, she and her last “Little Old Lady” were in the hospital together and she was checking on her. Pauline was the glue that kept the Hopewell family connected. The family could count on her for summer cook outs, weddings, birthday parties, holiday activities, bus trips and any activity that would bring the family together. Everyone was welcome (including the children). Pauline was an excellent cook. Her potato salad was the dish that everyone looked forward to when the family got together. Paula had a special menu for all occasions. Her home was open to everyone. If you needed some place to stay, you were welcome to stay there. Paula will be missed by the family. Paula was formerly married to James McNeely and from this union two children were born, Pina and James. She later married James (Winkie) Saunders. He was a knight in shining armor. He has stuck by her for over thirty years through thick and thin. He was with her night and day during her illness at home and in the hospital, answering all her calls. Pauline is survived by: her husband, James Saunders; five children, Donell McQueen (Roy), Charles Hopewell (Elaine), Robert Hopewell, Pina and James McNeely; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Survivors also include brothers, Harold Hopewell (Louise) and Bert Hopewell; sister, Bernice Hopewell; sisters-in-law, Estelle, Bertha, Shirley, Janet T., Janet, Francine and Barbara; brothers-in-law, Dorsey and Joseph; mother-in-law, Arlean Saunders; and a host of nieces, nephews, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends
