Paula Elaine Winston

Our beloved Paula Winston was born December 5, 1950 in Frankfort, Germany to Louise and the late Joe Calloway, Sr. She was the loving sister to Marilyn McDonald-Carney, Arlene McDonald-Jones and Yolanda Yvette McDonald and one brother, Joe Calloway, Jr. Paula was called home to the pearly gates of Heaven to her Lord and Savior, March 5, 2015. In her early years, Paula lived on a farm in Georgia with her paternal grandparents, who were sharecroppers. She was very curious and was quite the “Tom Boy” growing up. She loved animals and participated in various farming duties; to include picking cotton by hand, planting and harvesting crops. This work ethic continued into her adult life as she would work 34 years at Tyson Foods, formally known as Holly Farms. Paula attended elementary school in Georgia but attended middle school and high school in Richmond. She graduated from Virginia Randolph in 1969. Paula was a member of First Union Baptist Church of Richmond, Virginia. She loved to read the Bible and was a great lover of gospel music, fishing and spending time with her family, especially her god children. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed helping others. Paula was very socially conscious and was a member of both the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Richmond Branches. She was an active participant in many activities of those organizations. In 1997, Paula and her sisters Arlene and Yvette participated in the Million Woman March together in Pennsylvania. She worked for Tyson Foods (formerly Holly Farms) since 1981. She joined the union and remained a member for 30 years and eventually became shop steward for the UFCW Local 400. She was a very active advocate for her co-workers and was a dedicated employee. Paula had many great friends. Among her best friends were Mary Vine, Rhonda Phillips, Gayle Reid, Jean Turner, Don Cash, Ezelle Lee, Bobby Wyatt, Lucille Martin, Linda Baskerville, Donna Clark and Alvin Bailey. She was married to James “Pete” Winston for 18 years, whom she lovingly referred to as ‘my husband’. Paula leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted husband, James “Pete” Winston Jr.; two stepdaughters, Angela Thompson (Eric) and Chris Brock (Kevin); eight grandchildren; mother, Louise McDonald; three sisters, Marilyn Carney (Lionel), Arlene Jones (Larry) and Yolanda Yvette McDonald; brother, Joe Calloway Jr. (Laurel Robinson); two brothers-in-law, Dennis Winston (Adelaide) and Ronald Winston; two sisters-in-law, Robinette Poole and Jeanette Mallory (Lewis); one devoted aunt, Jessie Hill; and a host of other relatives and friends.
