Paul Carl Butler

Paul Carl Butler was born to the late Ella Butler on August 19th, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland. He departed this life on Thursday June 2nd, 2011. Paul received his education in the Baltimore City Public School System. At the age 17 he was employed by Continental Can Company located in the 3500 block of East Biddle St. He stayed with that company for 45 years. He only missed five days of work during his working career. He humbly retired in the fall of 1991. After retirement from Continental Can Company. Paul volunteered at St. Ambrose Outreach Center for fifteen years. He took his new job seriously, and transferred his work ethics to his next phase in his life. My Father, Paul Butler was hardworking, strong, loving, and gentle. He had a “Lifted-up-Spirit”, but he was very humble. He was very loving all the way until his life was completed. He loved his family and was deeply devoted to my mother and three siblings. When I would ask, “Why does Daddy work so much?” She would look at me and say. “Honey, every one’s Daddy works a lot”. I didn’t realize it then, but that was one of the biggest problems lesson learned from my dad- the value of hard work. He woke up every day put on his shoes and went to work to provide for his family. I could count on one hand how many times my dad was sick. He truly believed that if you worked hard, treated people right, and with a little luck from God, you could have a good life. Although my dad may never have said it out loud I know that he was truly proud of his children and the way we all have grown up. When we would all get together on the holiday, he would sit in his favorite chair in our living room with his chest all puffed out. His grandkids would scurry around the room, and everyone would want their chance to sit on Grandpa’s lap. Paul and Clara were married on January 20, 1947. The ceremony was performed in their home on Vincent Street in Baltimore, Maryland by the Rev. Frank Jenkins from that union they had three beautiful children, Paula, Steven, Pamela, and one adopted son Ronald Sampson. Paul was a dedicated family man who took place in his responsibilities as a husband, father and friend. He did this in his quiet manner and without complaining. Paul loved going on cruises, fishing, and watching all types of sports. Paul’s brand of humor was seen in his jokingly and mispronouncing the names of his family and friends. When asked a question; he would always reply by making a “thumbs down motion. “Ricco”, affectingly known by his friends, grandchildren, and other family members, was a great man. He was adored and loved by his wife of 64 years, Clara Joan Butler; and daughter, Pamela Butler, Three of his children preceded her in death) Paula Newman, Steven Butler, and Ronald Sampson Sr.; one daughter-in-law, Jeannetter Butler; one son-in-law, Eugene Newman; eight grandchildren, Andre Newman, Tiffany Butler, Shanika Sampson-Ragland, Stephanie Butler, Paris Newman, Ronald Sampson Jr. Seven Butler, Alexandra Butler, and a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, relatives and friends.
