Life and Legacy Patricia Ann Haywood Moore was born on September 28, 1943, in Washington, DC and she joined the Ancestors on Wednesday, April 22 at 8:17 am in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Born September 28,1943 at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, DC first born child of Marie Weaver Haywood, Tuscaloosa, Alabama and John Wilfred Haywood, Jr., Waxahachie, Texas. She is the oldest of three children. She has two brothers. The elder brother is John Wilfred Haywood, III. The younger brother is George Weaver Haywood. She has a number of nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. One sister-in-law and three brothers-in- law. Both parents were Educators in the DC Public School system. Her father taught Latin at the famed Dunbar High School in Washington, DC and her mother taught English at a number of schools. Her father was a graduate of Lincoln University and Columbia University (Master’s Degree in Latin). Her mother was a graduate of Stillman College, Talladega College and the University of Michigan (Master’s Degree in English). She taught Corretta Scott later to be Corretta King, wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at Lincoln School a Rosenwald, School in Marion, Alabama in 1937 (Rosenwald was a series of schools built throughout the south financed by Julius Rosenwald with the rubric and idea from Booker T. Washington, founder of Tuskegee Institute now University). Patricia’s paternal grandfather was The Reverend Dr. John Wilfred Haywood, Sr. President of Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Wiley College in Texas and Morristown College in Tennessee. He was the first African American to be Head of what is now Morgan State University. Her maternal grandfather was George Augustus Weaver, 1899 graduate of Howard University School of Medicine. He did his medical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. From a family of scholarship and achievement, Patricia continued the family tradition with her numerous achievements and career attainment. She graduated from Calvin Collidge High School, Washington, DC, Class of 1961. Patricia played field hockey and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Following graduation she enrolled in the University of Iowa. In 1962 she entered the four-year baccalaureate degree program in Nursing at Tuskegee Institute now Tuskegee University (Tuskegee University was the only accredited program for African Americans in the United States at the time). While at Tuskegee University she was a cheerleader and member of the Tuskegee Choir. Patricia pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Gamma Kappa Chapter at Tuskegee University. Upon graduation she took a position as a RN at the VA in Washington, DC. From 1967-1969 she trained to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) at the University of Michigan. In 1969 she married, Dr. Roscoe M. Moore, Jr. from Richmond, VA they first met on the campus of Tuskegee in 1962. The two were married on August 2, 1969, at the historic Asbury United Methodist Church, Washington, DC with Patricia’s paternal grandfather, The Reverend Dr. John Wilfred Haywood, Sr. in attendance on the altar. Roscoe holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Tuskegee University; he was honored at the 1990 commencement with the Honorary Doctor of Science degree for his distinguished public health career. Roscoe holds a MPH degree from the University of Michigan (1970), PhD degree from Johns Hopkins (1985). Dr. Moore was the 5th United States Chief Veterinary Medical Officer appointed by C. Everett Koop, Surgeon General of the United States. Dr. Moore was the first African American Veterinarian to be named Assistant United States Surgeon General. In 1994, he was chosen by the White House to head the first official United States Health Delegation to the New South Africa to foster cooperation in the health sector between the governments of the United States and the New South Africa. Dr. Moore achieved the rank of Rear Admiral in the United States Public Health Service. He was the first African American Veterinarian of all of the Uniformed Services, including the Military to achieve the flag rank (Rear Admiral). In 1969, Patricia received her certification as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) where she became an instructor, 1969-1970, School of Anesthesia at the University of Michigan (Mott) Children’s Hospital on the campus of the University of Michigan. From 1970-1971, she was a CRNA at Freedmen’s Hospital on the campus of Howard University, Washington, DC. From the union of Patricia and Roscoe they had two wonderful Sons. Roscoe Michael Moore, III and John Haywood Moore. Both are graduates of the National Cathedral School for Boys, St. Albans School in Washington, DC. They are her pride and joy. Roscoe III is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy in Astronautical Engineering, “Rocket Science”. He has a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown Law and is a private Pilot. John is a graduate of the University of Virginia in Finance/Psychology. He has an MBA from Columbia University in Finance. Roscoe III is the author of a number of patents in the satellite industry. He served on the Board of Directors for Space Vest and was featured in Forbes Magazine for his work. John was the first African American to play Varsity Lacrosse at the University of Virginia. He was selected Team Captain twice and took the team to the National Championship games in 1994. John played professional Lacrosse nationally and globally and played the Wales National Team based on his Mother’s historic Ancestry. They both adored their Mother and enjoyed being in her presence. In 1971-1973, Patricia was a CRNA at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta Georgia. In 1973-2003, Patricia was the Founder and President of P.H. Moore Anesthesia Services, LLC, Rockville, Maryland. From 1973 -2002 (when it closed in 2002) she was a CRNA at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, DC. From 2002- 2005 she was a CRNA at the VA Hospital in DC. Full circle she retired in 2005 at the VA Hospital where she began her career as a Nurse. Upon retirement Patricia began recreational and competitive tennis at the Aspen Hill Tennis Club in Maryland. She and her husband had season tickets for all of the professional Washington Sports (football, basketball and baseball). Her other interests include theater, ballet, dance (square dancing). In addition, Patricia enjoyed collecting clown and owl artifacts, raising indoor orchids, aerobics exercises and reading. They also had season tickets to the Arena Stage, Mechanic and Hippodrome Theatres in Baltimore and the Strathmore Music Center in Rockville, Maryland. With profound sorrow, Patricia Haywood Moore has joined the Ancestors, my beloved and cherished Spouse and Friend for 56 years, and the Mother of our two SONS, Roscoe III and John Haywood, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 8:17 a.m. in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Her life was filled with remarkable joy and vitality. Her kindness, regalness and elegance touched all she came in contact with. She made a profound impact on all. Her absence will be deeply felt. I know I will miss her. May the Ancestors Celebrate her coming.
