Norvie Alfreda Emanuel

Norvie Alfreda Emanuel, beloved daughter of the late Catherine Hogan Smith and Joshua Lloyd Smith, was presented as a gift from God on June 4, 1947. She was called to eternal rest on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Norvie refused to allow anything to slow her down. Her spirit was always upbeat. Laugher was her best medicine. Her favorite saying was, "I'm still kicking, just not quite as high." She was an avid reader, (Stephen King was her favorite author), strongly opinionated, and a determined debater. Norvie was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. While attending Frederick Douglas High School, she was a swimmer, ran track and was a member of the Debate team. She attended Coppin State College, majoring in Nursing. She retired from the Maryland Department of the Environment in 2007. Norvie became Sister Norvie X when she converted to the Nation of Islam. She was a member of Muhammad's Temple #6 in Baltimore, Maryland where she met and married Brother Bernard X. Norvie had four beloved children that preceded her in death. Her spirit now joins theirs, as it returns to Allah. They are: Ron Epps, Yassin Emanuel, Durri K. Emanuel, and Jaimee E. Perry. Norvie was also predeceased by her special love and friend, James Perry. Norvie leaves so many to cherish her memory: her beloved partner of 25 years Quill J. Rich; her beloved children: Nuyen Emanuel, Shondia M. Emanuel, Joshua Perry and his wife Yasmene and her special daughter Tori Diamond; her only sibling and dear sister Carla Graham; her uncle, Charles Vann, nephews Roderick, Charles, Rufus and Sean, nieces: Denice, Patricia, Dawn, Kalilah and Mia (who also preceded her in death); her precious grandchildren: Maisha, Shondia, Kalimah, Aliya, Rodriguez, Yasmin, Hassan, Nadiyah, Kamilah, Tariq, Amira, Aliyah, Imani; and her treasured great-grandchildren: Mahneera, Noah, and Saeedah. Sister Norvie had a big heart and was the adopted mother of many. She referred to them as her "children-in-love". They include James Mack, Akbar Muhammad, Mikal Muhammad/ Montana/ Mikal Jr, Mustafa & Nasir Muhammad, Malika & Majida Sharieff-Muhammad, Ahmed, Tauheeda, Safiyyah, & Isaiah Collick and Tiffanie Caine-Williams. Norvie will always be remembered by The Believers of Muhammad's Temple of Islam #1, especially by her friend and sister in faith, Sis Rashida Muhammad. Space does not permit the listing of the countless other members, friends, neighbors, former co-workers, and acquaintances who have shared in the life and love of Sister Norvie.
