Norman Young

NORMAN YOUNG, affectionately known as “Scubby”, was the fourth of six children born October 8, 1939, of the late Leroy and Airlean Young. Norman received his second birth, through baptism, on June 18, 2005 at the Berea Temple Seventh Day Adventist Church.Norman “Scubby” received his early education within the Baltimore City Public School System and later he picked up training as a cobbler in the trade of shoe repair. Using his cobbler training, Scubby worked for many years at this father’s business, Young’s Shoe Repair, located on East Baltimore Street and later on south Broadway. Scubby also worked as a building maintenance engineer at the Epstein Department Store. It was during this time that he met Linda Jackson and they later married on October 4, 1967. From this union he was blessed with two children, Wanda Rosetta Young and Wanita Elaine Cornell, and two stepchildren, whom he loved as his own, Warren Lamont Jackson and Subanese “Ray Ray” Barjogar.There were many who considered Scubby to be quite handsome (although somewhat rugged) and he was a sharp dresser, especially when it came to his shoes; however, it was his pleasant smile and charming personality that first attracted his companion of 14 years, Harriet Williams. Harriet faithfully cared for Scubby during his illness until God laid him to rest.Scubby will mostly be remembered as being, outspoken, full of life, and having a talent for making others laugh. He especially took pleasure in bringing joy to children and seniors.It was his strong will and determination that, despite his failing health, allowed Scubby to find strength in God to fight his way back on numerous occasions. On Friday, December 30, 2005, Scubby finally succumbed to his long-term illness at his home.Until the Giver of Life awakens, Scubby leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted companion, Harriett Williams; his daughters, Wanda Rosetta Young and Wanita Elaine Cornell; one son-in-law, Kevin; two step children, Warren Lamont Jackson and Subanese “Ray Ray” Barjogar; two grandchildren, Wanika, Brian Jr.; two sisters and one brother, Shirley Breese, Rosetta Young, Irving Young; sister-in-law, Sharon Young, and host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
