Norman Carter

Today, we gather to celebrate the life of NORMAN EDWIN CARTER, a man whose presence filled the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Norman was born on February 4, 1940, to Norma Lee and Joseph Carter in Wilmington, North Carolina, and from the very beginning, he possessed a spirit of resilience and unwavering faith. Norman’s journey through life was marked by dedication and service. After attending Douglass High School in Baltimore, he embarked on a distinguished career at General Motors, where he devoted thirty years of his life to hard work and commitment. But Norman’s impact extended far beyond the workplace. He was a pillar of our community, serving as the President of the Edmondson Village Community Association, where his leadership and vision brought about positive change and unity. Throughout his life, Norman found solace and strength in his faith. As a longtime member of Leadenhall Church, he embraced the teachings of the Bible and found joy in attending Bible study and Sunday school. One verse that resonated deeply with Norman is Psalm 119:105, which reads, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Norman lived by these words, allowing the teachings of Scripture to guide him through life’s challenges and uncertainties. Norman was not only a devoted servant of God but also a family man. He leaves behind: three daughters, Andrea Cooper (Chester), Tina Hughes (George) and Norma Reed (Umar); ten grandchildren, Keyia Yalcin, Xavier Carter, Jamie Griffin Jr., Justin Cooper, Jamyra Carter, Hope Hughes, Alden Cooper, Martin Hughes, Janiya Reed, and Jalaal Reed; four great-grandchildren, Olivia Yalcin, Sofia Yalcin, Jamie Griffin III and Xion Carter; and a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and a great uncle. Norman was also a passionate sports fan, particularly of Baltimore sports teams. Whether cheering on the Orioles or the Ravens, his enthusiasm was infectious, bringing together friends and family in shared moments of excitement and camaraderie. As we mourn Norman’s passing, let us take comfort in the promise of Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Though we may grieve his loss, we find solace in knowing that Norman now rests in the arms of his Heavenly Father, reunited with his beloved daughter Kim McDonald, brothers George, Charles and Joseph Carter and sister Nellie Collins and all those who have gone before him. Norman’s legacy of faith and service will continue to inspire us all in the days and years to come. As we bid farewell to our dear friend, let us honor his memory by embracing the values he held dear and carrying his light forward into the world. Rest in peace, Norman Edwin Carter. Your journey on this earth may have come to an end, but your legacy will endure for eternity. Amen
