Nathaniel Marshall

Nathaniel Marshall was born on July 1, 1926 to the late Bubba and Lillie Mae Chapman in Charlotte, North Carolina. The last of four siblings, Hubert Marshall, Fannie Gilespie, the late Roberta Gilchrest and the late Robert Marshall. He truly loved his family.Shortly after birth, his mother became ill and died. His grandparents, Rafe and Annie Marshall, stepped in to raise the children. He was educated in the public school system of Chesterfield, South Carolina.He came to Baltimore at the age of 17 to find employment. He held various odd jobs in the city. At the age of 20, he went back to Chesterfield, South Carolina to take care of the family farm after his grandfather took ill. He put his life on hold to take care of his family. After losing his grandparents he moved on with his life. Thank God for Nathaniel Marshall for making the decision to return to the family farm and help with raising the family. He spent 34 years at Maryland Shipyard & Drydock Company.Nathaniel met the love of his life, Mary E. Wheeler. They were married August 20, 1973. No children were born of this union. During their life together, they traveled from the East Coast to the West Coast, hitting most cities in the United States.After retirement, he became an avid horticulturist. His home garden had plenty of flowers and vegetables. He loved working inside and outside his home.He recognized and accepted Christ at an early age. In 1995, Pastor William Outing baptized him at the Gordon St. Church in South Carolina.Nathaniel was a caring person and a true friend to those he allowed to enter his life. His famous last words “I’m waiting for her.” (her, being his wife, Mary). Early Saturday morning, May 22, 2004, he quietly slipped away from life to a tranquil place of rest.He leaves to mourn: his loving wife, Mary Marshall; his sister, Fannie Gillespie; his brother, Hubert Marshall; his three daughters, Edna Gibbs, Patricia Snow and Veronica Thomas; his seven sons, Wendell Marshall, Ralph Marshall, Nathaniel Thomas, Tyrone Thomas, Gregory Thomas, Vaughn Thomas, and Kenneth Thomas; his aunt, Maebel Byers; his son-in-law, his daughters-in-law, and a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
